maternity pillows?

back in the dark ages when I had dd2 I had a blissful, enormous, 5ft long maternity pillow that practically pushed dh out of bed. I believe it was made by gro-bag. I have been looking around online and they appear to have evolved into longer, thinner creations that can curl up like giant, white dog turds. Are they sufficiently supportive? Especially if you're beached-whale size before you've started pregnancy! My old one was heavy, almost felt as if it was filled with wet sand, but very robust and I want it back really

I used the DreamGenie pillow, bought from nct online. It was brilliant, also tried smaller wedge one which was not enough support for me at all.

I hated DreamGenie, too difficult to turn over in the night, for me it was more of a hindrance than a help. I got this one which I bloody love: www.duvetandpillowwarehouse.co.uk/product/Body-Pillow-With-Pillowcase/pc/PP6--B
Probably not as heavy as the one you remember, but it's certainly helping me sleep. Not too expensive too.

Ah yes, it was difficult to turn over, but once I got comfortable it was bliss. Also, they advised me to always sleep on one side anyway so it stopped me from rolling over ingot my back.

I know what you mean about the Dreamgenii Londonmrss, it makes you stay in the same position.
I suppose you could argue that is a good thing if you're trying to sleep on the left hand side as per the guidelines and normally find that difficult. I can only sleep on my back normally and the Dreamgenii makes it too uncomfortable to do that...I'm only 15 weeks at the moment I've not been bothering with it as I just want to get some sleep but in a few weeks time I guess it will be great for forcing me into sleeping on my left side, I'll have to get used to it!

i bought a simple bodypillow/bolster from dunelm for £13.99 because i was intimidated by the "giant, white dog turd" ones (haha). it's very basic and like wrestling a crocodile when i turn over but i love it...

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 20/08/2012 17:12

I prefer the long ones too - I use this one from DAPW and love it especially considering it's cheap :)

Ha ha, LondonMrs great minds think alike...

I got the maternity support pillow from Mothercare. I love him, he's my new best friend.

AcquaViolet · 20/08/2012 23:18

I'll third that The Dream Genii is a total waste of money. I had a better time with a cheapo bolster I bought years ago from Ikea. Just got into a tangle what with the cat and DG getting in the way, so put it back in its case and shoved it on top of the wardrobe.

As for sleeping on your left, well, the experts say it's good to do it, but not utterly mandatory.

Did try using DG to support DS while BF but any old pillow/cushion will do, so long as you don't mind it getting covered in milk!!

Up until recently, I have been doing the crocodile thing and wrestling with a normal-sized pillow at night. Then I bought a super-long pillow at Lidl recently and I swear the bloody thing is the cause of the nightmares I've been having ever since.

It's like having an extra person in the bed and frankly it just seems to get in the way. For now, it has been banished to the bedroom floor, but I may try and re-start the relationship when I get bigger and more desperate for support!

Theraline. Amazon has them. It's filled with microbeads so is mouldable.

strugglingwiththepreteenbit · 21/08/2012 00:18

Theraline! That's the stuff! Thanks badger!
