Padding of Moses Basket?

I was recently given a moses basket and thought we'd give it a try.

I believe it is Mothercare (but that could just be the mattress in there) and it is covered in a thin white cotton lining thing. No patterns, nothing fancy, just functional.

Pulled it apart last night to inspect and I just wondered whether it might be a little "scratchy" where the weaved patterns are.

Should I get some type of lining to put between the basket and the cotton lining thingy already there? If yes, would that light fibre stuff that is sometimes sewn between two pieces of fabric be OK? Or maybe just another cotton sheet?

Or would padding just make it too stuffy inside and therefore dangerous?

Maybe I'm just a freaked out first timer? Any advice gratefully received.

My Moses basket (2nd hand but new mattress so not sure what make the basket is) has a brushed cotton type liner over the wicker then a decorative cotton liner that covers the basket inside and out then the mattress/bedding so I guess you can buy separate inner liners? Hope that helps!Smile

Normally there is a layer of light lining between the basket and the inner cotton lining? Have a look on eBay for 'Moses basket lining' or 'Moses basket covers' and you might see what I mean, not sure how else to describe it Confused. Yu can buy replacements seperately. Some baskets like those from mamas and papas seem to have a thicker lining, more wadded if you like, while the cheaper baskets seem to have far less lining and padding.

From a safety point of view - thicker padding around the sides makes me nervous and I think I would keep it on the thinner side, personally! Tho I have opted for a crib with DC3, instead of a basket.

I had same thing, basket from friend of my sisters, new mattress, not much to line except cotton cover. However I found that baby was so small it didn't touch the sides and they can't move for themselves for a good few weeks, so it is unlikely to touch the sides, except maybe when waving arms around.

you could improvise an old pair of trousers maybe if you can't find anything specifically for it. I don't think it would make much difference to how stuffy it is. They are pretty shallow anyway. :)

My baby grew out of his moses baket at 5 weeks. Don't spend too much!

pillow cases make good matress sheets.

Also the current advice is that you get a new mattress for each new baby, so you may find that the cost by the time you have bought extra lining, plus the cost of the mattress, is nearly the same as buying a reduced/special offer/discounted brand new basket Confused

Thanks for the help ladies... and you're right mrswoz about 'renovating' a moses costing nearly the same as buying a new one!

Mine is a mamas and papas one and it has a sort of wadding round the sides. I guess you could improvise with a rolled up blanket or towel but agree nothing too thick as you want a bit of air circulating.
