Is hyperemesis inevitable?

Just that really. Suffered the whole way through with dc1. Had 2 subsequent pregnancies where i wasn't half as sick, in fact felt quite well. These ended in mc though so I wonder if that has something to do with it? Anyway contemplating trying again but not sure I could face 9 mths of worry aswel as hyperemesis. If you've had it once is it inevitable you will get it again? Desperately want a sibling for dc but not sure I can do it.

DS1: Had terrible hyperemesis all through pregnancy.
DS2 (Due 2nd Oct- now 33+6): Only sick for the first 19 weeks.

NeedlesCuties · 20/08/2012 08:35

I didn't have it at all for DS, in fact I was sick 5 times the whole pregnancy.

Am now 39 weeks pregnant with DC2 (not sure what sex it is yet) and had terrible hyperemesis until about 8 months.... was hospitalised for a few days at around 10 weeks.

I agree with you, OP, in feeling that you couldn't go through that again.

Watching, I was sick for first 3 pregnancies which ended in mc, then sick all the way with ds. Wondering if I have another am I in for months of head down loo and permanent sea sickness, dizzy spells and generally feeling like rubbish ?

LaVolcan · 20/08/2012 08:56

I was sick from 13 weeks to 39 weeks in my first pregnancy, and dreaded the thought of another one like that.

Second time round it was a completely different experience and I only felt a bit queasy once.

Well with me I had HG with my first pg, morning sickness for first 12 weeks with second pg, and am currently 34 weeks pg with dc3 and have had HG again this time Confused

I certainly won't be risking it again with a fourth tbh.

CouthyMow · 20/08/2012 09:05

HG till 7 months with DD. Took me 4 years and an assurance from Ob consultant that it was unlikely to happen again to continue with my pg with DS1. HG so severe I spent 19 weeks out of 40 on a drip in hospital!

Swore I would never have any more.

18 months later, I fell pg again (despite birth control). Almost had a termination, but couldn't go through with it. Had HG all the way through, though not as bad as with DS1, only spent 6 weeks in hospital.

Yet again, swore I'd not have any more. Though still couldn't be sterilised due to my age.

After a 7 year gap, I fell pg with DS4. Yet again, HG. Again, right up until I gave birth.

Have been on meds for HG for all 4 pregnancies. Metaclopramide was the most successful for me, though with DS1 I ended up on stemetil suppositories as I couldn't keep water down to swallow pills.

Now? I'm getting sterilised in October (finally old enough, had DD at 16 though, so have had a long wait to my 30's!)

Could NOT go through it again. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear!

CouthyMow · 20/08/2012 09:06

Littleplastic - were your DC1 and DC2 different sexes? If so, I would place a bet that your current pg will be the same sex as your other HG pregnancy!

If not, then I am as Confused as you!

CouthyMow · 20/08/2012 09:09

Or were they with different fathers? I have been told that your risk is increased if you have a previous HG pregnancy with the same father, but your risk is slightly decreased from that (though still above the population generally).

Lolalollipop · 20/08/2012 09:22

Urgh it's awful isn't it? Think I might stick with 1. The thought of 6+ months of vomiting and dehydration are enough to put me off Sad

I had HG when pg with my DD, although it was only up until 16 weeks but had general on going food aversions until birth.

I'm currently pg again, 15 weeks and I'm having twins. No HG. Shock And have only been sick about 15 times in total up until now. I do have a cereal aversion (again) and can't eat early in the morning. But it's not even in the scale compared to last time.

I feel very lucky to have escaped it (so far) this time especially as I'm pg with twins.

I do wonder if they're boys in there, just because I'm so much better this time.

Littleplasticpeople · 20/08/2012 11:16

Cowthy, dc1 (boy) and dc2 (girl) so yes, logically I'm assuming this one is a boy Grin

Lola, it's so difficult to decide to go ahead with another pregnancy. I went for it quickly after dc1, I knew if I had waited I would never have done it again and I really wanted more than one dc. Then of course I didn't get HG so was tempted to do it again! I honestly think this is it though, it has been a truly horrendous pregnancy- am 33 weeks now and still sick most days.

CouthyMow · 20/08/2012 11:58

The pregnancy where the HG stopped at 7 months was a girl, all the ones where it continued to the end have been boys. My mother was worse with girls though.

Also, they think there may be a genetic link with HG, so if your mother had HG, you have an increased risk of it.

My earlier post was MEANT to say that if you have a second pregnancy with the SAME father, you have a much higher risk of having HG again.

If your second pregnancy is with a different father to the first, you have a higher risk of HG, but not as much as if they had had the same father, as the risk is lowered a bit, though the risk of HG in a second pregnancy will still be higher than the risk for someone in the general population!

kalidasa · 21/08/2012 13:34

My mother (five children, several miscarriages) and sister (three children, two miscarriages) both had it will all pregnancies, though my sister says the sickness eased off around the time the babies probably died with her mmcs.

I have had a terrible time with it, was in hospital a lot at the beginning and entirely in bed for three months. Have finally stopped vomiting every day at 26 weeks but still feel unwell. To be honest regardless of what the doctors say I am assuming that it would be the same for me each time, given the family history. It's a really tough decision, I am already worrying about it. Especially the impact upon the whole family - including the first child - of being that ill again for so long.

tara0202 · 21/08/2012 13:39

I had it both times but second time was nothing like as severe as the first.

SzechuanPalace · 21/08/2012 13:47

I had it both times, much worse with second one. It was worth it though, love havinf DS2 but it was harder the second time because still had to look after DS1 whilst being sick. I had 13 months between them so it was hard work looking after a baby whilst being ill.
