Help with morning sickness, other than ginger?

I'm sure this thread has been done before, but has anyone got any tips to help with morning sickness ? I'm a bit stuck as I can't stand ginger! I've seen a few pills and those wrist bands advertised - does anyone know if they're any good?

Have you tried having a drink before you sit up? Sounds mad, but I found it helped - if you have a glass of milk or cup of tea before you've managed to sit up (not that easy but do-able) then it can squash the morning sickness.

DIdn't try any pills or wristbands though.

The travel bands worked quite well for me in first pregnancy. The second required medication from Dr though.

Thanks so much for your suggestions!

I've heard peppermint tea. I used to like the smell of lemons so lemon drink or something that smells lemony maybe not toilet cleaner like I had sat on my desk at work

QuietNinjaObsessing · 18/08/2012 12:27

The toilet cleaner was to sniff not drink! not that I did this cos I would've looked mental

SneezySnatcher · 18/08/2012 12:52

In my first pregnancy the travel bands worked well. I also found eating before getting out of bed helped. This time, peppermint tea works briefly but I'm feeling absolutely dreadful and I'm struggling to leave the house. Lurking to find any more tips!

theTramp · 18/08/2012 13:04

I've felt nauseous rather than been sick. I find eating little often helps. Avoiding certain things has also helped - weirdly
My favourite Jasmine tea makes me feel rotten. I love ginger but can't say it made much difference. Potato and bananas however have really helped. I think it's the potassium, makes me feel better. I've been craving nuts which would fit with that too.

GrandPoohBah · 18/08/2012 13:49

I found citrusy things really good. Toast to nibble on before leaving bed, and sniffing peppermint tea bags. Ginger didn't help much IMO.

PrimaBallerina · 18/08/2012 13:52

Only tablets - cyclizine - worked for me. See your GP and see what they recommend.

Hennycluckington · 18/08/2012 13:52

Eat before getting out of bed and have a good supper just before bed. Don't eat and drink at the same time.
Don't let yourself get hungry basically, as it makes it worse.
Rest and sleep as much as possible, I found the more tired I was the worse the sickness felt.
Just coming throughout now 16 weeks and feel lots better.

The wristbands have really helped with my nausea. Other than that, reducing the size of my meals and adding an extra one (i.e. gone from eating 3 times a day to 4 times). Making sure I get enough protein in each meal helps too.

Lora1982 · 19/08/2012 09:09

cola helped me :-D although i didnt suffer half as bad as most ppl on here

HugeFurryWishingStool · 19/08/2012 09:24

Indigestion tablets worked for me: the crunchy calcium ones. I had excessive stomach acid from about 14 weeks so munched them all through pregnancy

GusTheOneEyedPolarBear · 19/08/2012 09:41

I found ice and plain tortilla chips worked (something about the texture) I hope you feel better soon, nausea and morning sickness is hell

onedev · 19/08/2012 09:46

My DH used to bring me a slice of dry toast in bed before I got up & that really helped first thing. Then throughout the day I would eat little & often. It didn't go away but made me less ill.

I completely agree with those who say to get plenty of rest as that makes a difference too & although it may not feel like it, it will pass Smile

PeshwariNaan · 19/08/2012 09:46

The wrist bands took the edge of for me - I wore them for a full 8 weeks (only discovered them 2 weeks into "morning" sickness).

Munching on carbs frequently helped - cream crackers, etc. I ate all day even though I was vomiting. Don't let yourself get hungry.

Fizzy water w/ lemon helped.

Avoiding sugar helped me - it triggered my nausea badly.

Avoid smells - if you can get your DP to clean (good luck!) that will help.

Bananas are good too!

I never took tablets because even though I was ill all day, being sick twice a day for 10 weeks - there are people much worse off than I was. However I didn't have a job at the time and could just lie in bed most of the day. Actually, that helped the most out of anything - just lying in bed!

ikigai · 19/08/2012 09:46

Arrowroot biscuits are good for nausea.

caramelgirl · 19/08/2012 10:19

Acupuncture is meant to really help (it's the principle behind those acupressure bands). Last time fresh air, lemon juice in water or other tangy things and tons of carbs took the edge off it for me but I think, if all goes well with this pg, that I will definitely get my acupuncturist to help. No good just refusing to go near anything which smells bad when I'm in charge of a toddler size stink and mess factory!
Good luck, hope that you feel better soon

Frontpaw · 19/08/2012 10:28

Hula Hoops and digestive biscuits worked for me. It was worse when I hadn't eaten for a while, so no skipping breakfast.

ndyz · 20/08/2012 10:28

I have to say I was originally sceptical about the bands, but it got to a point where I was desperate and gave them a go. They are fabulous. I now live in them. Combined with ginger (I take the pills with food because I also dislike the stuff), and making sure my stomach is not completely empty, i.e. small meals throughout the day and especially just before going to bed, andthe world is a different place. Sea-band are available at a good price at Amazon uk

BetterOnACamel · 20/08/2012 10:33

My sister swore by Carrs Table Water crackers - kept them by her bed and ate some before sitting up in the morning. (We're still TTC#1, so no personal nuggets of experience)

JessieEssex · 20/08/2012 10:55

Tangy, sour and citrus flavours really help with me, as do fizzy drinks (usually fizzy water but sometimes diet lemonade). All seem to help cut through the general gunky, heavy feeling and leave me feeling (a bit) more perky! Good luck...

JennerOSity · 20/08/2012 14:04

I find a banana always helps the morning sickness go to a manageable level. I also drink weak peppermint tea as the refreshing flavour takes my mind off the nausea. Good luck, it'll get better eventually. :)

lovelychops · 20/08/2012 16:50

Thanks so much for all the responses and suggestions.
Probably should have said in my OP that it's nausea rather than actual sickness... but I suppose the principles are the same.

I'm trying to eat little and often as suggested, and going to try the other ideas an the wrist bands if it gets any worse.

I like the sound of lots of rest, but it's not always easy with an 18 month old to look after. I'm sure i didn't feel this bad this early on last time but hey. Hope everyone else who is suffering feels better soon. Smile
