Hi all,

Please can someone tell me what varicose veins down there look like?

And what can I do about them should I have them? Can I use it to get signed off work? I'm desperate to get away from work!!

Many thanks and i hope you are all coping ok in the heat.

Char x

Can you be more specific?

theTramp · 18/08/2012 13:00

Varicose veins are prominent and bulging. Often very blue or purple. Usually on one or both legs and quite unsightly. Can mean cramp and discomfort but not generally life threatening. Not a reason for being signed off work. If very bad can increase risk of deep vein thrombosis when travelling. Dr/consultant may suggest wearing special control stockings to reduce risk of clotting - but sitting around is not advised.

If bad post pregnancy look to get them stripped. No
Guarantee that they won't come back though.

Hi devil. I am 28 weeks and have had this awful problem for the last 6 weeks. haven't really found anything that helps that much. I have been signed off work for the last 6 weeks as I can't sit or stand for very long so if you are really struggling it is worth going to your gp.

I think the OP means varicose veins around her genitals. Not her knees.

Op this is common in pregnancy. Get thee to a GP. they sound bloody painful

theTramp · 19/08/2012 10:26

Oh. In which case - ow & def see GP and get signed off.

datingthedevil · 19/08/2012 11:35

Sorry, yes that's what I mean grizzly. What do they look like? Thank you x

Not sure what they look like but spoke with a friend the other week to ask if she got them on her legs whilst preg, as I've just had some appear, and she had the genitally and said it was as itchy as hell. If that helps!

theTramp · 19/08/2012 15:56

Genitally as in piles? If so plenty of pics on Internet.

GrizzlyFrontBum · 19/08/2012 16:04

No genitals as in genitals.

Piles would be anal.

theTramp · 19/08/2012 16:46

Ouch

I was expecting pregnancy to be a lovely experience but I keep getting all the bad things happening to my body. I wonder what will be next? Thanks all

If in doubt, discuss with your Doctor.

Should put your mind at rest

MissPollysTrolleyed · 20/08/2012 07:16

I've got them. Mine don't look like veins and are just a big ugly swelling mostly to the left side (which is side the varicose veins in my legs are too for some reason). I can't imagine you could use them to get signed off work. They can be uncomfortable but I can't see that being at work would increase discomfort.

Sorry Grin.

MissPollysTrolleyed · 20/08/2012 07:17

Oops, didn't mean to Grin at your work situation. I meant to Smile sympathetically. Good luck!

I'd love to see the look on my boss' face when he reads why I'm signed off lol. He always tells me off for giving him too much info. Hed be mortified!!

My gp just wrote pregnancy related illness on mine. I would have been pretty embarrassed if he'd written the actual reason! Good luck with getting signed off. My gp was fortunately very sympathetic. I am now thinking how lucky I am to have got 2 pregnancy no 5 before experiencing this horrible problem!

plummie2003 · 21/08/2012 10:41

Hi! I had varicose veins 'down there', i never actually saw them, but it just felt like I had an orange between my legs, very swollen and painful! My doctor recommended I put my feet up as much as poss so yes I would say you could deffo use it to get signed off work. good luck! x

urbanturban · 21/08/2012 20:38

Am pregnant with DC3 and have had these in all my pregnancies. I have found it helps to make me feel 'suppported' if I wear fairly close fitting underwear and a thick maternity pad.

Midwife also told me to try and not sit with my feet up too much Sad as this makes the blood/fluid etc drain back from your from your feet and ankles and pool in your pelvic region.......don't know if that's true though!

FWIW with both my previous pregnancies, the varicose veins disappeared straight away after the birth! Grin
