Are poached eggs OK?

I'm avoiding raw egg in ice cream, home made mayo etc - but surely in a poached egg, the yolk is warmed through so germs would be killed? Really fancy one but not sure if it is OK!

I thought only hard boiled eggs were ok, where the yolk is cooked all the way through, no runny yolk. Have you looked on the nhs page?

twolittlebundles · 18/08/2012 07:31

strictly speaking, yolks should be totally cooked (solid). Your call though!

Are you in the UK eating normal lion marked eggs? If so they should be fine as the chicken will have been vaccinated against salmonella so the chance of there being a problem is absolutely microscopic. I've eaten loads of poached eggs, soft boiled eggs etc.

blackteaplease · 18/08/2012 07:32

The advice is that you should avoid runny eggs due to the risk of salmonella.

I have decided to ignore that advice for shop bought lion branded eggs as they re vaccinated and therefore the risk is very low. I wouldn't eat a running egg from a chicken that hadn't been vaccinated though.

Basically it's up to you to read the advice.and determine what level of risk you are happy with.

I really wouldn't worry/ defy yourself much (apart from alcohol/ cigs)
I am speaking from experience (had cravings for Brie for the whole of my 2nd pregnancy/ cracked at 6months and drive to tresco in my pj's for a cheese board

Massive cross post!

The yolk must be thoroughly cooked, so hardboiled, or scrambled eggs are fine, as are fried eggs if the yolk is hard, soft yolks aren't comes sufficiently to kill the salmonella risk.

I ate eggs in both previous pregnancies in all conditions and plan to this time as well - the risk of salmonella is incredibly low. They change the food rules all the time anyway. I was delighted to see for this pregnancy that you're allowed Brie, Camembert etc now as long as they're cooked. Baked Camembert for lunch today!

The information I received said about the risk of soft boiled eggs etc being salmonella (as discussed above) & it doesn't say it causes harm to the baby/crosses the placenta (like listeria & toxoplasmosis can) so personally, I'm happy to risk it. I had norovirus when pg with my DD & whilst it wasn't pleasant (when is a stomach bug ever nice??) the main issue was dehydration, which can easily be avoided in most cases. In the case of listeria & toxoplasmosis, I'm taking active steps to avoid them, but with the others, I figure normal good hygiene is enough.

I ate plenty of poached eggs, it was one of the few foods I fancied. But like others have said, this is in the UK and they were lion-stamped, so the risk is very low anyway. So if you go for it you will not be alone!

Midgetm · 18/08/2012 09:40

Lion mark eggs are almost certainly fine to have a bit runny. Worse that can happen is salmonella (risk is minuscule) which doesn't cross the placenta so a risk to you not really to the baby. I have had runny eggs all the way through and not been ill once. In fact the only time I had salmonella was from a hard boiled egg shop brought sandwich when i wasn't pregnant (bloody horrible it was too). This was years ago before I think lion marks existed.

Thanks all, really helpful! Think I will check for lion mark & have one for lunch :-) have read conflicting things but risk seems low. Appreciate the answers!

Of course, that's the gudeline, but the risk is up to you. I posted then ate 'raw' rock cake mix with DD so I can't really talk lol!

ZuleikaD · 19/08/2012 06:48

Yeah, I had raw egg in the gingerbread cake mix this morning!
