Anyone suffered badly with heartburn from really early on?

I'm 12 weeks pregnant with DC2. With DC1 I was on ranitidine for severe heartburn for the last trimester and the heartburn seemed to be caused by DS pushing up on my stomach.

This time heartburn kicked in badly at around seven weeks Confused. My morning sickness has now abated but the heartburn continues, along with its own special brand of nausea (different from MS), and of course the obligatory searing pain after eating.

It doesn't seem to matter what I eat, or how much. Even a couple of mouthfuls trigger it. I've been relying on Gaviscon but it's not that effective, it wears off quickly and it's vile. I would like to move back to Ranitidine - anyone else taken it this early? Am I just being a wuss?

i had it very early on too, i deeply sympathise. the first trimester is bad enough without the misery of heartburn on top. it did fade quite quickly for me though so hopefully you won't have to put up with it for long. although now i'm in the third trimester and it's back with a vengeance!

if you can stomach it i found milk helped a bit and made a change from the flem in a bottle (Gaviscon). i don't know what the Gaviscon tablets are like, they might be worth a go...

good luck, i hope it fades soon x

Thanks hz - you're right, maybe it will drop off for a while

Tablets are rubbish, sadly. Phlegm it is

I could've written your post myself!

I have been taking rennies tablets as I did last time and doing deep breathing exercises which does help.

Milk and.dry white bread are good for temporary relief too.

My heartburn wasn't bad from early on but it made up for it from 7 months on. Got so bad the gaviscon started making it worse. Swig off milk when every I felt it coming on and a slice of bread if it got bad ( I ended up going through 4 pints a day). I was being sick every night with it my last month. I really hope it's gets better. It's put me off having another!!

Mine has been dreadful right from the start this time. I did however find that it eased up once in the second trimester. I put it down to my digestion speeding up again a little. I know it will be back with a vengeance soon but for now I am getting by on Gaviscon.
Hope this is the case for you too!

Heartburn was horrendous with dc1. This time round it was my first sign of pregnancy (the night before I took the test). It continued but actually hasn't been as bad (only got so severe from about 37 weeks where I'm munching through about 30 gaviscon tablets a day).

Unfortunately I have no tips on how to reduce it- I'm just waiting to get the baby out now so it can go!

Beckamaw · 18/08/2012 05:48

Gosh, yes. Take it as soon as needed.
And if that stops working, visit your GP. I ended up on Omeprazole. Brilliant stuff!

PickleSarnie · 18/08/2012 06:27

First time I got it only in the last few weeks. Second time it kicked in practically as soon as I had wee'd on a stick.

I second omneprazole. It was a miracle.

Bread seems to set mine off terribly Confused

Jenbird, interesting point on things being exacerbated by a slow digestive system. I've also been having that things where you feel ravenously hungry and then the very INSTANT food touches your lips you become uncomfortably full.

I've been all about the digestive symptoms this time (bloating, constipation, diarrhea, stomach cramps, heartburn, gas - a joy to live with! :o). Roll on the second trimester!

Pickle, how early did you start on omeprazole in your second pregnancy?

I was probably about 20 weeks toaster, but had whinged like hell suffered in silence for weeks before then.

I find sleeping with many pillows under my head helps at night :)

applepieinthesky · 19/08/2012 12:38

I struggled through it but found it started to ease once past about 20 weeks. Dreading it coming back though.
