Would you eat reheated rice?

I made a chicken and chorizo paella last night and there's plenty left. Normally I would reheat for tonight but is this ok when pregnant? I wouldn't reheat a takeaway, but is home-made ok? Obviously it's been kept in the fridge.

If it had been put in the fridge as soon as it cooled down then, yes. If it stayed outside of the fridge for few hours, then no.

OneLittleToddlingTerror · 17/08/2012 16:06

Yes, I eat reheated rice all through my pregnancy. I regularly pack lunch with rice in it.

OneLittleToddlingTerror · 17/08/2012 16:06

In fact it stayed out quite often for a few hours ....

And I'm not sure that bacterium responsible for food poisoning after eating left over rice would necessarily harm your baby. It's called cereus something IIRC if you want to google it. So whether you're pg or not, it's never a good idea to leave the cooked rice out in room temp for long time as the cereus bacterium produces toxins that are heat resistant, so even if you reheat the rice well, it will not get rid of them iyswim. But cook, allow to cool down, put in the fridge-should be ok.

bonzo77 · 17/08/2012 16:11

Yes. I do all the time. Just reheat very well.

OneLittleToddlingTerror · 17/08/2012 16:16

Reheating it won't kill the dormant bacteria or something. It has to do with not letting it sit at room temperature. All Japanese bentos are eaten cold and we don't see lots of Japanese women and children sick from bentos.

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacillus_cereus

"The emetic form is commonly caused by rice that is not cooked for a time and temperature sufficient to kill any spores present, then improperly refrigerated. It can produce a toxin, cereulide, which is not inactivated by later reheating. This form leads to nausea and vomiting 1?5 hours after consumption. "

No, I don't tend to, and I also avoid rice from a takeaway because it will have been cooked earlier, cooled, and re-fried though it might be overkill Blush

Midgetm · 17/08/2012 16:19

Yes I would and I do.

OneLittleToddlingTerror · 17/08/2012 16:23

Yes fluffyjaws I'd avoid takeaway rice tbh. It's definitely in the category of been sitting at room temperature for a while. Same with buffet rice in bain marie.

I eat reheated rice all the time, not experienced any problems so far

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 17/08/2012 19:01

I do. Am 32 wks. We make sure it's gone straight in fridge when cool.

gazzalw · 17/08/2012 19:02

Never ever had a problem with cooked rice eaten cold or reheated.....

Midgetm · 17/08/2012 19:06

I am pretty sure there is no need to avoid rice. Lots of food can give you food poisoning - you can still eat them. The things you need to look out for are things that cross the placenta like toxi or listeria. These harm your baby. This kind of poisoning would just make you chuck up. Potentially you would avoid everything if you thought about all the things that COULD give you FP. Maybe avoid anything sitting around in a buffet table too long or is more than a day or so old. Of course all risk is up to the individual but I will still be chomping rice.

TunipTheVegemal · 17/08/2012 19:11

Yes, avoid if you have let it sit at room temp for any length of time.

DH and I have had the rice-related food poisoning and it was not fun and not what you want when pregnant. I don't think there is any reason to think it would harm the baby, but it can make you very sick. (It was in a restaurant with about 20 other people; the 12 or so people who had rice got it and the 8 who had noodles were fine. The Environmental Health people got involved and investigated.)
It would never have occurred to me rice could harbour bugs but it can if not fridged promptly.

I got told years ago at Slimming World that you shouldn't eat rice that was cooked more than 12 hours ago but I have to be honest, I've always ignored it and been fine.
