I am 36 weeks and have just realised I haven't had my wee tested once!!

This is DC2 and I'm sure I can remember endlessly peeing in bottles last time?!!

That is really really strange and a fundamental part of antenatal appointments, where abouts are you?

backwardpossom · 17/08/2012 09:22

The midwife should check your urine at every appointment. I think they're looking for protein?

booflebean · 17/08/2012 09:23

Cornwall.

I've just looked in my book and in the column that says urine it says "no sample provided" for every appt I've been to!!!

I have an appt on weds I think I will offer....

That is seriously rubbish. Need to be checked for sugar, blood, protein and infection. Hmm

elizaregina · 17/08/2012 10:33

checking wee and blood pressure are integral parts of the appointments.

this is incredibly appalling.

i would call doctors and speak to head doc - and also call head of midwives for your area.

i hope your ok and dont have any issues but if this is being missed across the board there could be a lady from your surgery out there RIGHT NOW with pre eclampsia or something else that has been missed.

i would take this very very seriously.

elizaregina · 17/08/2012 10:33

"That is seriously rubbish"

I would say serious malpractise and life threatening to mum and baby.

ValiumQueen · 17/08/2012 10:34

Take a sample with you.

booflebean · 17/08/2012 10:37

Oh my goodness!!!!

farfallarocks · 17/08/2012 10:37

I would ask to speak to the supervisor of midwives.
Theyare testing for sugar (diabetes), protein (preeclampsia) and infection (GBS strep) all things that if left uncontrolled can be very dangerous. Appalling treatment from your midwife and a complaint is in order.
Have they checked your blood pressure and fundal height?

booflebean · 17/08/2012 10:55

Yes checked fundal height (spot on), blood pressure (constant 100/60), listened to baby's hb and felt baby's position each time.

Everything else seems to have been done properly just no wee testing!!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 17/08/2012 11:04

Please do complain to her supervisor - there may be other women who aren't being checked and are are in danger of developing complications :(

Sunnystormyday · 17/08/2012 11:36

The midwife should definitelyask.... But you should definitely always take one to midwife and clinic appts.

The onus is on you, I'm afraid. Sad

Chunkychicken · 17/08/2012 11:43

Has your MW not even asked for a sample? I got a urine bottle at my booking in appt at 8wks & my MW asks for it (if I haven't already got it out for her).

I can't believe that the MW has been writing down 'no sample provided' without at least mentioning it to you at the appointment!!

FireOverBabylon · 17/08/2012 11:55

How can they say "no sample provided"? At my first appointment, I was given a bottle and directed to the nearest loo pronto. She can't get away with writing that, surely it's for her to provide you with a bottle if you haven't come with a sample, to not conclude the appointment until you've provided one, and to give you another bottle on your way out for next time?

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 17/08/2012 11:58

Have you never been asked though??

You should have been asked at your very first appt, and told you'd need to bring one each time.

I just bring one and pop it on the desk, they then just check it when they're ready.

CinnabarRed · 17/08/2012 11:59

If you take a sample with you (and you should!) make sure you don't do what my friend did: panic when her wee tested as off-the-chart for sugar thinking she had diabetes, and then realise that she'd pee'd in a recently finished jam jar and not washed it out well enough first....

booflebean · 17/08/2012 11:59

Umm no bottle, no mention, no asking...

OP posts:
elizaregina · 17/08/2012 12:04

Boofle

You I assume are not a MW? saying the onus is on you, is like asking for a pint of beer and the bar man pours it over you becuase you didnt ask for a glass.

Its ridiculous, we are not MW we are not paid as mw - its part of her job to do a check on you!!!!

how can we as lay people possibly know what we are supposed to do at each appopintment!

you need to honeslty - make a fuss about this - because you may have a problem that hasnt been detected but someone else may be out there - totally unaware and also be at great risk!

I had a friend with pre eclampsia - the whole sittuation escalted from two weeks of .....what is this? never heard of it - to a dead baby.

Its really *ucking serious!!!!

ValiumQueen · 17/08/2012 12:04

The GP receptionist will have a box of bottles to give out, or you can use any little pot well washed out. Have you only just looked at your notes?? Perhaps as you are on DC2 they assumed you knew. They should have reminded you though.

elizaregina · 17/08/2012 12:06

BTW

my persoanl expereice has been handed bottle by doc and midwife and told very very clearly to bring a sample at each apt.

for vairous reasons i forgot to take one to my docs appt and he gave me a bottle and asked if i could do one there and then.

with last preg, as part of her routine...now - have you got your urine sample - again on the very odd occasion i forgot - or lost the bottle or forgot to take it with me, handed a bottle there and then - can you do one!

its PART OF THIER BLOODY ROUTINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

elizaregina · 17/08/2012 12:07

Perhaps as you are on DC2 they assumed you knew

they are dealing with peoples lives- you cant " assume" anything.

showtunesgirl · 17/08/2012 12:09

WTH?! At every appointment, I had to do a sample. Why has this MW not done this? It's a fundamental part of their job!

showtunesgirl · 17/08/2012 12:10

elizaregina I would assume that the MW would know their job!

elizaregina · 17/08/2012 12:17

Its an appalling over sight - i feel really really cross because as said I know someone with pre eclampsia.
If I knew her surgey I would be calling up complaining right now.
