Hi all - I am a first time mum to be - due in February. I am struggling to get excited about having a baby - feeling anxious about the billion things that could go wrong, getting bored with feeling sick and not being able to stay up past 8pm etc. I would love to find a funny, tongue in cheek, realistic mum to be book that would perhaps make me feel better about being pregnant - or make me feel less alone. No airy fairy 'Life is a gift' stuff please - preferably very British and witty.

This is a good read as is this.

The Rough Guide to Pregnancy is a good read. Australian, but both funny and informative. I've known pregnant schoolgirls enjoy it as it's so lighthearted.

Mumsnet guide to pregnancy made me chuckle - plenty of quotes from here

ROugh Guide to Pregnancy definitely.
The Yorkshire Puddings Cub too, even if you have no connection to Yorkshire. It is set at the hospital where I had my two babies, but I didn't knwo that at the time I bought

Libby Purves- How Not to be a Perfect Mother. A bit old fashioned now but funny and sensible and reassuring.

I really enjoyed blokes guide to pregnancy - a friend lent it to my other half and I couldn't help myself! Funny, easy read, informative and also did give me a good alternative view point at times.

I loved this when pregnant:

Best Friend's Guide

And she also has one to motherhood which again I found very funny:

Motherhood

I would say these kept me sane and would totally recommend them.

I started reading 'The Best Friends' Guide to Pregnancy' when I was about 8 weeks, and it made me and my husband laugh out loud. It's written by an american, but on the whole relevant to anything over here too.. Esp. the bits about going emotionally haywire!

I recommend The Food of Love as well, and this is completely hilarious:

Let's Panic About Babies

It's a complete pisstake, but a great antidote to those ultra-serious pregnancy books. I love it.

I liked Mel Giedroyc's book From Here To Maternity, and the follow up book about the first year.

wowee! thanks everyone. Will try those. Bought "What to expect when you're expecting" yesterday - which has already scared me half to death and "what not to expect when you're expecting" which I havent started yet. Will def give some of those a try :-)

I second the recommendation for The Rough Guide to Pregnancy & Birth - it's informative and light-hearted.

This book is a good (and funny!) 'alphabet' guide (and is really cheap on Amazon atm too!)

Brugmansia · 21/08/2012 12:18

Zoe Williams' book. It has been published with 2 different names. I think the original is "bring it on baby". Not a guide as such but very funny and does include some useful information and a good perspective on the whole thing.

JessieEssex · 21/08/2012 13:37

I second the recommendations for the Best Friend's Guide books - really funny and informative. The What to Expect books are great as a reference if you have a specific concern but a bit full on to read cover to cover.

This is a giggle too
