Does the parents birth weight influence the baby's weight?

I'm not sure if this is another old wives tale, I was told that the baby's birth weight will be somewhere in-between my birth weight and my partners.

I was 7lb 4 and my partner was 7lb 9, so I'm thinking that my baby will be something in-between that.

I'm 34+2 and my midwife felt the bump yesterday and said my baby will be about 8lbs at birth.

So just wondering if there is any truth in this theory? (It's my first baby and I'm scared of having a really big one!)

Glad you've asked this question, something I'm wondering too! My DP was a small 6lb and i was over 8lb at birth, we're complete opposites now... he's a muscle monster and I'm little! Intrigued as to what others come back with xx

Weird I was just about to post on this topic.
I have 3 dc's and am 26 weeks with #4. My previous babies were:

Ds1 11 days early and 7lb 12
Dd1 4 days early and 7lb 13
Ds 2 1 day late and 9 lb 1

I was 9lb 8 at birth and my HB was 6lb 5. My family has a history of big babies (my sisters boys were 9lb 8 and 10lb 10)

My husband is 6ft and tall and slim. I am 5ft 5 and generally pretty athletic.

I am worried that this time I will have a monster baby. In my last pregnancies I was doing a very physically active job (personal trainer) but stopped working after ds2 and have not been able to do too much this time due to sheer exhaustion.

What makes babies bigger? Why do babies seem to get progressively bigger?

heliotrope · 15/08/2012 15:24

I thought babies generally getting bigger because of better maternal health and nutrition (up to a point, but also more diabetes which makes babies big in an unhealthy way)
I was 7lb something and dp 6lb something, but our babies have been 9lb and 8.5lb. So we certainly don't back up the theory.
However, although big-ish birth weight babies, both boys went down the charts rapidly to sit on the 25-50 centile by about 6 months. We're not tall people so wouldn't expect them to be large, I guess I just ate a lot of cake in pregnancy (well I know I did!). They came out chubby looking, not skinny like other babes.

Also I believe head size is a big factor - mine have big heads, which on a baby is a lot of the weight!
Wouldn't pay much attention to MW guesses on weight though - I think it is just something they do for fun and can't really tell very accurately. I may be wrong!

I was 9lb and DH was 6lb something (although he was a twin).

DD = 10lb 10oz. No diabetes. A midwife told me i had 'a very efficient placenta'. No idea if this was the case but i did feel proud in a weird sort of way Grin

Paddocks1 · 15/08/2012 15:45

Interesting topic...i was 8lb 8 and my DP was 10lb 6.....Im preparing for the worst. ouch!

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 15/08/2012 15:46

I was 7lb 11oz. DP was 7lb 7oz.
DS was 7lb 11oz!

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 15/08/2012 15:49

I have heard that often heavier babies are easiser to birth. It is the head circumference and presentation which is the cause of some difficult births.
My ds had 38cm head which wonderfully Hmm for me was slightly on the wonk (brow presentation) so a bit of a square peg round hole situation Wink

SamraLee · 15/08/2012 15:50

I was nearly 8 lbs, husband was around 9lbs, daughter was around 6 and a half pounds.

melliebobs · 15/08/2012 15:51

I was 8lb4
Dh was well over 10lb

Dd was 7lb15

Make of that what you will

GimmieChocolate · 15/08/2012 15:55

I was 6lb 10oz hubby was high 6's (doesn't know exactly!) our daughter was born 6lb 13oz so a whole family of 6's. We were also all born in the same month!

So the weight thing worked for us much to my delight of having a nice little one to push out!

scentednappyhag · 15/08/2012 15:56

DH was 8lbs, I was 9lbs 7oz (I know, I know!) and DD ended up little slip of a thing at 6lbs 1oz, although the midwife warned me at my last appointment that she was going to be a big 'un Grin
I don't think there's any real way to predict, and I imagine your first DC feels pretty big coming out no matter what weight it is Grin

megab · 15/08/2012 16:43

Cheers for all the responses, it does feel like it could be an old wives tale to be honest, I suppose an 8lb baby isn't that big... Lol I guess i'll find out in a few weeks haha :)

Yeah TheLaineyWayIsEssex my MIL told me that a bigger baby helps with delivery, pushing down more etc

Suppose the weight doesn't matter really, just wanted to see if other people had heard of this

I was 6lb13 at 40+12, DH was 8lb exactly at 40+0.

DS1 was 8lb9 at 40+6; DS2 was 7lb9 at 40+0.

In other words we were all pretty average for dates and sex at the time. I think maybe extremes are more likely to run in families.

mrsbugsywugsy · 16/08/2012 15:54

I'm a bit worried about this. I was 6 lb something but dp was 9lb 10 Shock

I am only 5'2 and scared of having a monster baby!

Angelico · 16/08/2012 19:06

Interesting thread! My husband was 6lb 9oz, I was 7lb 7oz. At 33 weeks my bean is already est weight 6.5lbs!!! I am freaking out a bit that something is wrong and really hoping US is just inaccurate :( I was OW pre-pregnancy but 'passed' a GTT at 25 weeks...

mrswee · 16/08/2012 20:08

I was erm... 10.2 Shock and dh was 6.1 my dd was 7.2 I wonder what the next will be, they say your next baby can be bigger.
