Tips on how to stop constant sugar rushes?

For about a week I've been getting what feel like sugar rushes. They first started after I'd eaten something sweet but gradually they're getting to be after everything I eat!

I've had them after every meal (and one snack) today and I'm also getting the crash after the rush where I could fall asleep on a chicken's lip! I've also got a major headache now and feel so rough with it all, am going to bed in 10 minutes!

Anyone know if this is normal during pregnancy? And if so, what can I do to prevent it?

Thanks

What's your ratio of carb/protein/fat like? In particular, are you getting enough protein?
Pre-preg I successfully eliminated all sugar peaks and troughs by ditching all refined carbs. I could go 5-6 hrs btw meals and not feel hungry whereas before I would get low blood sugar angry-hungry if I went that long. I'm not suggesting you do that during pregnancy (and, in fact, I've reintroduced some since morning sickness kicked in as low carb was making it worse), but upping protein, having some w/ every meal, and trying to eat healthy complex carbs might help you?

Have you been tested for gestational diabetes? Not to worry you but I was getting crashes after eating carbs or sugars and it turned out I have GD. Perhaps mention this to your midwife and see what she recommends?
I feel so much better now I've cut out sugar and reduced the carbs.

Smicha may be right - might be wise to get tested.

You may find this site useful - the Glycemic Index of a food is a measure of how quickly the body can covert its nutrition into glucose, and there are a lot of non-sweet items which have a very high GI (i.e. the body processes them into sugar very quickly) - you might find that you feel happier and healthier on a low-GI eating plan for the rest of your pregnancy.

Thanks for your replies - will definitely be looking into complex carbs and the GI diet.

I read these replies this morning (didn't have time to reply then) and I've not eaten any 'obvious' sugar today (sweets, chocolate etc). I found that the rushes/crashes haven't been as bad - did get one after my lunch which included pasta but only lasted about two hours so hopefully I can learn to control them.

I'm not seeing my midwife until 2 weeks time but may give her a call just to see if she wants to test me for GD

Thanks again
