Baby Boy and what to wear

So, I'm 34 weeks. First baby - boy. Have no idea what to buy for him clothes wise. I get very muddled up with long sleeved bodysuits, short sleeved bodysuits, vests, bodysuits with legs or no legs, or feet or no feet, sleepsuits, outfits, etc, etc...... I am due in sept...what do you think I need most of and whats the best to dress him in. This is probably because of my hormones but its really upsetting me that I don't know what to put him in!!!!

Prior to Ds I had no clue what a baby wore, so I knwo how you feel!! I brought all the wrong things to hospital and they looked at me like I was some idiot!! Anyway- He was born September and for the first 3 months wore A sleeveless or short-sleeved vest with a sleepsuit (the one with the feet in, long sleeved) all the time. He was just so comfy in it and I wasn't into dressing him up in outfits- i'd rather he be comfy since he spent most of the time on his back snuggled up asleep anyway!!

Get a dozen or so vests and a dozen sleepsuits and a pram suit (an all in one winter warmy thing that is good for when you go out to keep him snug).

Oh and a hat. I'd say that's about it.

Good luck and don't worry. You can't be more clueless than I was!!

Lots of vests - and some sleep suits - is all you will need

Plus hats and some thing warm to go over the top.

Cardigans?

peanutMD · 13/08/2012 19:59

6 short sleeved bodysuits
6 all in ones
3 knitted cardigans
2 pairs scratch mitts
1 hat

everyone buys baby clothes as gifts so you will end up with so much stuff that will never get worn honestly but the basics.

They don't need shoes, hooded jackets our outfits you will change them so much and babygros are easy to wash.

My DS wore the same as nearly's. A hat, vest or short sleeved body suit (no legs) and a sleep suit. I always put him in sleep suits that had inbuilt scratch mitts, as separate mitts always come off.

I put socks on under the sleep suit if it was cold, and a cardi/jacket with a blanket over his legs, or a snuggly pramsuit over the sleepsuit when going out.

I didn't bother with 'outfits' until he was about 4 months old.

I agree with nearlymumofone. My DS was dressed like that for the first 5 or so months. You might want to get a cardigan or two as well. We put one on DS along with a hat and a blanket over him and tucked in if we popped out to the shops when it was too warm for the pram suit.

Empusa · 13/08/2012 20:05

Definitely vests! And if you can find the babygrows with built in scratch mitts, like this, then they are hugely useful!

Currently DS lives in sleeveless vests and/or babygrows with scratch mitts and feet.

John Lewis sell 2 pack of hats quite reasonably I think £4?

elliebug · 13/08/2012 20:16

Next and mothercare do built in scratch mits, they are the best invention ever!! I found next to be better quality, the stuff that I've put in the loft looks brand new! Don't worry too much, nothing we bought fit my DS so OH had to do emergency shopping!! So my carefully planned outfit went out the window Grin good luck for the next 6 or so weeks

shoeprincess2 · 13/08/2012 20:18

Lots and lots of cheap short sleeved body suits and sleepsuits with built in scratch mitts. Tu at Sainsburys do a good range and they are generous in size. DS1 was a September baby- the only issue I had, was he was 62cm when born so had to go straight into 3-6 month clothing. I had bought loads of 0-3 month stuff, which ended up being packed straight away. We had to call in at the local supermarket for packs of clothing when I was discharged from hospital! DS2 is due 6 September and I have now washed and got ready a selection of 0-3 month AND 3-6 month clothing! A nice couple of cardigans are a good idea, but I wouldn't really spend on lots of little outfits. People will probably buy them for you, but they are more faff for nappy changes etc. Particularly in those first few weeks. Plus, you'll probably go through 2 or 3 clothing changes with milk spit up and bum mess, so sleepsuits & bodysuits are so much easier. All the best. S x

Empusa · 13/08/2012 20:29

Oh yes, keep buying clothes until you think you've got more than you'll ever get through, and then buy more! Grin DS gets through at least 3 outfits a day, even if we use bibs!

Empusa · 13/08/2012 20:30

Forgot to say, car boots and charity shops are really good for baby clothes. You can usually find clothes that are as good as new

Stardust01 · 13/08/2012 22:26

I think the simplest combination (well, worked for me) is short-sleeved or sleeveless vest (i.e. no legs, looks like a women's swimming costume) and then long-sleeved bodysuit (with legs and feet) over the top.

Stardust01 · 13/08/2012 22:27

Sorry, I think the long-sleeved bodysuit is called a sleepsuit.

tinyshinyanddon · 14/08/2012 00:04

I think you have some great suggestions but you might want to get a couple of fancier things for going out and about. My sept baby wore a short sleeve body suit, cotton stretchy trousers and a zipper hoody with socks when we wanted to be fancy. Sometimes this actually cuts down on laundry as the troos could sometimes do 2 days (gasp!) whereas we changed onsies 2-3 times some days.
