Full bladder for scan?

I have my first scan tomorrow (6+3 due to high risk pregnancy). It was all arranged with the hospital on the phone because there was a bit of urgency involved.

Anyway, the result of that is that I know where to go and when, but not what I need to do. Am I right in thinking that I need to go with a full bladder? And how full is full? The scan is at 9.40 tomorrow, but if I wake at 6.30 there is NO WAY I'll be able to not pee at all before then.

Help please!

I am 28 weeks and I have had 6 scans since 12 weeks and have another 4 scans scheduled. The letter from the hospital says to have a full bladder. I have not done this for any of my scans and not one word has been said.

I had the anomaly scan at 20 weeks with my twins and they saw everything they needed to on both babies. I have a high BMI so fat or thin, I don't think it makes a difference.

Our hospital uses 4D scanners.

I've had TV (dildocam Grin) scans right up to 24 weeks, that is stunning detail!

if it is early (which yours is) they can do a vaginal scan and thus no full bladder needed.

In case you were wondering... You were right, they did a trans-vaginal scan, so empty bladder was the order of the day (thankfully - I need to wee ALL THE TIME).

Anyway, the scan was amazing - my first ever. Only 6+1 but was able to clearly see the heartbeat, the start of the umbilical cord, the baby and the yolk sac. EEEEEK Grin

I didn't need one for any of my scans so far. I'm in central London and the first one was at the Fetal Medicine Centre (9 wks) and the second was at a major research hospital here (13 wks). Check with your hospital. also bring some water to chug because you will likely have to wait and can drink up!

Definitely no need for a full bladder at 6 weeks- I had a scan at 6 + 3 and it was transfanny so they'll ask you to empty your bladder first.

Definitely have a full bladder for 20 weeks- I was never told to, but went with it full anyway. Then scan was an hour late- then I got told off for having emptied the full bladder they never told me to have! If your bladder isn;t full they might not get a good view or will have to press really hard.

But I very much doubt it will be abdominal for such an early scan.

OP ask to go back next week. At 7+5 I heard the heartbeat for the first time. Was very very cool :)
