stabbing vaginal pains - is this normal?

I'm 16 weeks, and just started getting stabbing vaginal pains. I had a very busy day yesterday, with lots of walking in the heat, so it could be stretching/ligament stuff - but it was quite bad last night while lying down in bed, and doesn't seem to be related to whether I'm moving around.

I asked Dr Google, and now I'm worried about the risk of incompetent cervix Confused. Unusual vaginal discharge seems to sometimes be a symptom, and a few days ago I had a once-off of quite a lot of mucousy yellow/green snot-like discharge (sorry - tmi! Blush). Apart from that, I've just had normal white milky stuff.

Sorry - I seem to have become a complete hypochondriac since falling pregnant. I'm quite annoyed with myself, but can't shake the 'but what if something really is wrong, and you could have done something about it?' thoughts... so I'd really appreciate it if you could either give me a slap reassure me, or tell me that this is something to get checked out.

i get pains like this 21+2wks, have done for a few weeks and did when pregnant with my older two, its nasty, for me its the beginings of SPD, so yes just streching and pulling and has no impact on the baby, just you. If your really concerned just ring your midwife, they don't mind :)

Thanks, StateOfConfusion - that's really reassuring that you got it from about the same stage in pregnancy, and have in previous pregnancies too. Oh dear, I hope it's not the start of SPD (although that would obviously be far preferable to anything which endangered the baby!)

i used to get this during pregnancy too - just like someone was sticking a knife up there - it didn't develop into anything else - was just one of those pregnancy niggles - but as always mention it to your midwife

It's probably nothing to worry about (despite what Dr Google would have us think!) - I'm 21 weeks and am getting all sorts of horrible twinges and pains everywhere. I had SPD with my first and I can feel the start of it with this one too - for me that's in the very front of my pelvis. I would say that you should mention the discharge at your next appointment - the chances are it's nothing at all but with DS1 it was the first sign of my cervix starting to shorten which was spotted at my 20 week scan and caused them to put me on partial bedrest for a long time.... but having said that I got to 40 weeks and had to be induced so they were probably just be over cautious! but it's worth mentioning and seeing if they think it's necessary to check it out (which for me was an internal scan every few weeks). I've had the discharge again this time around (not constant but a big clump of very thick plug-like stuff every couple of weeks or so) and I'll get them to check at my 20 week scan next week but I don't think they will worry.

It did seem like a plug of stuff, Shangers, which is I think why it worried me. I'll give my midwife a call, and see what she says. Thanks, everyone!

Me too! So glad it seems to be normal! Only happens every few days but its v odd, like an electric shock to the vag! Im 19.3 and it started at about 15 x x

Just to update, I went and got it checked out, and everything is fine. Seems to be just another one of the weird things that happen during pregnancy.

Thanks to everyone for the reassurance, and I am determined to chill out and stop worrying about everything!

Glad to hear that everything is fine! See - we told you! :-) I get freaked out everytime it happens too! It's just one of those things (and btw - it gets way more frequent in subsequent pregnancies apparently - according to the midwife, you just produce a lot more ... ahem... mucous!) Pregnancy's great eh!

I had this from 13 weeks and it feels like a knitting needle is jabbing me in the cervix or vagina. I panicked and scoured Google (freaking myself out), called NHS Direct for advice, made my doctor do a vaginal swab and asked the sonographer to check my cervix length at my next scan. Blush

Apparently an incompetent cervix isn't usually associated with pain and the general consensus from all medical staff was that the baby was bouncing on a nerve around my cervix. Joy!

I know I went a bit crazy but decided it was better to take action than sit and worry.
