Stuff to buy 2nd time round?

Well just that really, had DD in 2008 so still got the cot etc but just wondering what you would buy new for a second. I was planning on re-using the mattress but after some research I've decided to get a new one.

I tried and failed to BF last time but I expressed and gave what I could through a bottle so I'm thinking of getting an electric breast pump as the hand held one killed my hand last time, any suggestions on what brands to go for would be a great help.

I know I'll need maternity pads etc, but is there anything I've forgotten?

Also can I re-use the bottles and just buy new teats or should I get new bottles as well?

Thanks guys, I still feel as clueless as the 1st time round!

My top thing on the list for my second time round is a good sling. I had one last time that I used occasionally but wasnt great but that didnt really matter as I didnt have anything else to do really. I ate when convienient etc with another lo im not going to be able to do that.

You could wait for the electric breast pump and possibly hire a hospital grade one they are available from most surestart/childrens centres. Though I have heard great things about the medela swing pump. No experience myself though. You might find you don't even need one though.

Due to having a small toddler also (going to be 2.1) we are also thinking of getting a travel cot for downstairs to use as a playpen for a little while. So I dont have to worry too much about small toy parts etc if I need to leave the room.

SneezySnatcher · 09/08/2012 14:21

We bought so much last time that we didn't need. This time I'm hoping to get away with (although this may be wishful thinking);
New cot mattress
Playpen/travel cot to contain the baby if I have to take DD to loo etc.
A buggy board for the Bugaboo (DD will have just turned three so I hope this will suffice).

I have slings from last time and I think they will be well used again!

SneezySnatcher · 09/08/2012 14:23

Just to add - the medela swing was a great pump (not that DD would ever take a bottle Hmm.

Chunkychicken · 09/08/2012 14:32

We're getting/have got;

New cot (as DD still in her cot bed)

'Baby hoodies' (DD was a Spring baby, but this one is due in winter, so need layers/winter warmer)

Buggy board and double/tandem buggy (as DD will be 2.6 so may walk but equally in winter, may need a double)

Playpen/travel cot (may borrow from in-laws)

Some nice pjs to sit around the house in after birth so I can milk the sympathy as much as possible Wink

Some things I'm considering;

A bigger change bag (as DD still in nappies, but might be potty training/trained by then)

New sling (have one from DD, barely used, so may try a sling library)

Reusable nappies and wipes (feel a bit Blush at the sheer volume of waste produced by one DC, let alone 2!!)

New clothes (don't know if baby is a girl or boy & have a lot of gender specific clothes after newborn size)

Intend to breastfeed again, so will check the quality of rarely used bottles from DD and replace if/when necessary.

My friend has recently had a second and she found the one thing that made life so much easier was having one of them electric swings that rocks the baby.

I am defiantly getting one as when trying to deal with a toddler that few minutes of swinging to stop baby tears will be invaluable.
You can use the same bottles just get new teats , i am hoping to breast feed but still have everything just in case.

ArtyJennie · 09/08/2012 15:33

A more stylish changing bag- the last one is Knackered so I chucked it. As I'm not buying too much else I thought I'd treat myself to a leather pacapod bag.

Also- bought new bottles as the old ones had gone mouldy in storage!! (5years old) and the teats were almost as expensive as buying the whole bottle!

I'm gonna get a baby Bjorn carrier as the mother are one I bought on eBay last time was too complex to use so we didn't bother (plus we bought a sports car before we found out we were expecting so the buggy may not always be with us)

Kirsty240287 · 09/08/2012 15:35

I have an electric swing thing, was a present the first time round, and the sling was hardly ever used by my sis but I suffer from back pain and had it terribly after DD was born, must have been the muscles going back to the right place etc so not sure if I can manage with a sling, will try walking to school with it instead of using a pushchair tho.

DD will be starting full time in reception in Sep and I'm due in Jan so just hoping we get into some sort of routine in the mornings as it's hard work just getting her to stop watching TV and eat breakfast etc let alone having to try and feed, change and clothe a newborn plus wash myself! Confused wonders what she's let herself in for

Kirsty240287 · 09/08/2012 15:58

Kirsty I'm in a similar situation but no time to get into a routine. Dd starts reception in 5th sept- in due dd2 at the end of aug- so I'll be going straight into the school run not long after this one is born! Aaarg!

Still- I think it's easier having one at school during the day than having 2little ones at home at the same time!

MrsPaynie · 09/08/2012 17:39

Arty I'm gonna have 2 little ones at home and my eldest is starting reception in September, Im really wondering what I've let myself in for lol!!
I've not really bought anything different this time around (3rd) a few new clothes as got rid of most baby clothes and a new bouncer chair as the old one had done two and was ready for retirement! And also new bottles and teats. Luckily I still have most other stuff hidden away Smile I second the need for a swing! Great for keeping baby occupied for a few mins while dealing with a toddler. Mine was a godsend last time, and I'm sure will come in use this time too Smile

Chunkychicken · 09/08/2012 17:55

Its the thought of having to get my 2yo up dressed, breakfasted and out the door for baby group with a newborn that inspired me to get these baby hoodies Baby Hoodies by Morrck as I figured a change of nappy and baby would be goodto go if I just put him/her in the carseat and wrapped them up - they could stay in the babygro they had slept in unless covered in vom and/or poo.

holler · 09/08/2012 18:08

We had one of those hoodies with dc1, chunky. They're fab.
I'll be getting a newborn insert for the ergo sling (dd will stay in buggy at 21 mo). Maybe a double if this doesn't work.
New teats.
Small nappies!
Clothes if dc2 is a boy.

Kirsty240287 · 09/08/2012 18:14

Ooo I quite like the look of those chunky, I figured I'd just put baby in a snowsuit and a blanket on top, I'm due Jan so guess it'll be fairly cold. May get one of those or hint to friends that I want one as I think it would be quite good if you go for food and baby has fallen asleep in the car, you can un wrap them so they don't get to hot inside without disturbing them and hopefully enjoying your food with just the one child to keep entertained Grin

Good luck and let me know how you get on, if you pick up any tips for getting out quickly arty and mrspaynie!

Ooh I want a baby hoodie now! :) I'm due in late Dec and we are doing the new baby in the Ergo (under my coat I imagine) and DS in the pushchair, we'll see how long that works before we need a double pushchair. We walk a fair bit (the dog, plus I like it and it tires DS out!) so I'm not sure what kind of double will work out best. DS might get better on his bike or scooter in the next year, which would mean I can simply shuffle DS2 into the pushchair, when he arrives...

I need: An electric breast pump (v. short maternity leave, sadly)
Maternity Pads
Breast Pads
Lanisoh
lots of snacks for BFing...
Nappies

.... that's about it, I think. I spent aages agonizing of what kind of double pushchair and now I've pretty much decided I'm not going to do it, I don't need much stuff. I do need to get a lot of baby clothes out of the loft and coo over them broodily organise them, though!

SneezySnatcher · 09/08/2012 18:56

I have a hoodie too - love it!

victoriassponge · 09/08/2012 19:20

Why the new mattress?

Chunkychicken · 09/08/2012 19:44

I went back & forth about the double buggy. DD can happily walk a long way but still needs a nap in the afternoon. Now obviously a lot can change in the next 3mths or so, and I intend to have a sling and have bought a Kid-Sit buggy board which means she can sit down, but over the winter, I thought the only option would be to spend an awful lot of money on a double/tandem that would get about 6mths proper use. However, I have since seen the Smyths Dimples Duo which is 'only' £199.99 at present and £249.99 full price, and its got a variety of seating positions. I think its a really good option particularly for that price, & hopefully we'll get some use put of it. Then possibly sell it on.

SneezySnatcher · 09/08/2012 19:47

victoria current advice on SIDS prevention is to change the mattress for each child. It's supposedly to do with dampness from sweat/other bodily fluids etc encouraging the growth of bacteria/fungi. The more a mattress is reused the higher the risk.

I take most things with a pinch of salt, but a new mattress isn't too expensive really and TBH I know what has leaked/spilled onto DD's mattress and I'd not be too keen to sleep on it Grin

KikiRC · 09/08/2012 19:52

OP- I had BFing & expressing troubles, I found expressing by hand by far the best method for me (literally by hand I mean- not using a manual pump). Wondered if that might be worth a try at the beginning before shelling out on an electric pump? Good luck, anyway!

SkinnyMarinkADink · 09/08/2012 23:59

I am also 16 weeks op, am still suffering with sickness, taking anti sicks to stop it now.

Also have a brat dd, maybe they can sense the change in us?

will be investing in a hoody!

HappyCamel · 10/08/2012 10:00

Given how old the bottles are I'd replace them in case they aren't BPA free. You may well be able to feed though, get down to a bfing support group early on.

I'm going to use the pram downstairs for baby to sleep in and put the activity mat in a playpen so dd doesn't trample the baby. She'll only be 19mo. I'm also going to put a baby gate on the living room door she can't play on the stairs while I'm stuck on the sofa feeding. I'm also going to get a sling I can feed baby in.
