Anyone had a positive fetal fibronectin result?

I've been swabbed regularly in my hospital's prem clinic and they have been negative up until yesterday (28+3) when I got the call that it's positive. I know that false positives are common, and that the test is more accurate for predicting that you are not going into labour...but just wondering if anyone else has had a +ve result before and what their hospital's protocol was?

I've been told to take it easy and come in for monitoring if any signs of labour and am going for a repeat test and measure of cervical length next week (length yesterday was 33mm which I think is good)

Thanks in advance.

Have you had steroid injections yet? I'd be insisting on them if I were you. Have you had previous prem labours?

Hi I had a positive result on tuesday. I am 32 weeks. They have me steroid injections incase I was to start labour but my cervix was closed still.
I was keep in over night on tuesday and given another steroid injection yesterday. I was discharged yesterday and told to bedrest for a week. I have been told to ring back if anymore problems. You should ask about the steroid injections as I think there are quite important should baby come early! Fingers crossed for you x

Thanks for the responses.

Ds arrived at 36 weeks so a little early and have had recurrent mc's which was why they were keeping an eye on me.

Have now had first steroid jab and next one tomorrow. Fingers crossed for you too jlx - keep me posted! My cervix is 33mm (in case you were interested!!) so I wasn't admitted.

They didn't measure my cervix. I keep getting really sharp stabbing pains really low down. Just not liking not knowing whats happening. Hope everything goes well for you. Keep me updated too

how are things going jlx? have you had a repeat test or any more pains? Hope all is OK.

I had another positive fetal fibronectin test yesterday plus my cervix is shortening 28mm I think now. There's now a fairly significant chance i willl deliver in the next couple of weeks (I am 29+4) now but really hoping to get to 36 weeks like I did with DS.

Consultant has now banned me from commuting in to work - and shopping! No walking for more than a block. He kept mentioning how I shouldn't be walking around the shops. Either I must have looked like I was shopping addict (Confused) or he has a lot of women present in premature labour after a busy day on Oxford St.

What I would really like to know is the exact % chance of me going into labour now but i guess this test is still being developed - I am part of a study to refine it, so I can take comfort from the fact that i am helping to improve their data...

Hi PQ77 not really much change with me. Still getting pains but mainly in the evenings. I feel like something is going to happen soon but am also aware I could go full term or more.
Feeling a bit all over the place really, wish I just knew what was happening. And picking apart every symptom for sign of labour starting. I haven't been given any follow up appointments but see midwife next week.
Everyone is on edge in our house and its driving us all a bit mad.
How do you feel about going into labour early, have they keep you in hospital or do you live close so you can get there if needed?

PQ77 · 16/08/2012 17:00

glad to hear you must be 33 weeks now - do you have any other children? If you haven't been in labour before it must be particularly nerve shredding to analyse your symptoms. But even if you have been in labour before it is pretty hard to pick.

i'm not in hospital - I think i would just be using up a bed in a busy London maternity ward so happy to be at home. It's about a 30 minute drive in traffic in the middle of the day - but the Dr said to call the labour ward if I think i am kicking off and they can call an ambulance if necessary.

Last time I just called a mini cab and sat on a bin bag as my waters had broken...

I have one ds who is 5 but felt more nervous this time round, even before all this happened. My last labour was very quick, 2 hours so thats making me a bit nervous too. I'm 34 weeks on monday, knowing my luck i'll go overdue now.
Do you know what your having? Have the hospital said how accurate the test is, is it more likely now you have had a second positive?

PQ77 · 19/08/2012 10:09

Just an update - my waters went last night @ 30 weeks so looks like this fetal fibronectin test was pretty spot on. In hospital waiting to see what happens. Hope you manage to hold on a big longer jlx!

Hope your ok pq77. Have you had any contractions? What have the hospital said. X

PQ77 · 23/08/2012 19:05

Hi jlx - contractions have calmed down and after 5 days in hospital (and nearly zero amniotic fluid left) I am likely to be discharged tomorrow to monitor myself at home - worried Sad

Hope things are going well for you

Its good news that baby is staying put for now. Will you still be able to rest at home?

Nothing much has changed with me, been getting lower back pain today though so who knows, i'm just getting so fed up at the moment.

How is your kid now. I had steroid injection at 23 week and now am 30w, baby is still cooking inside me. But recent studies shows that steroids use may cause adhd or low iq to the kids when they reach school. So just wanted to understand, an anxious mum
