Anyone else measuring big?

Currently 31+4, had 4D scan at 30+1 and baby was measuring 33+4! Specifically her head and tum are measuring large. Sonographer said she looked fine (nothing obviously wrong) but I'm just hoping all is well. I had GTT at 25 weeks due to raised BMI but it was fine. Now I'm wondering do I need to repeat it?

Anyone else had this and all has been well?

Bumping shamelessly :)

I do think there is a margin for error, and if the sonographer said it all looks well then I'd take his/her opinion.

I had a midwife appt at 34 weeks and she told me I was measuring 38 weeks! I panicked! Had another appt yesterday, this time with a Consultant (am now 37+4) and measured fine for dates.

Try not to worry!

Good to know Needles - thanks for that! :) Think our bean just likes her grub... Hmm

Good luck - not long to go for you now :)

Get tested again or ring and ask if your reading was high. I was borderline for GD, just under the threshold for diagnosis and they sent me home saying I tested negative. Baby was huge and had blood sugar issues at birth, I measured 58cm at 40 weeks.. If I'd known I would have been induced earlier. Really worth pushing for a second test I think. This pregnancy I've tested negative at 16 weeks and they're testing me again at 28 weeks.

Thanks for that Osterly. Do you mind if I ask what your reading was? Mine was 7.3 and they said anything under 7.8 was fine. They did take my bloods half an hour late too (so at 2.5 hrs not 2 hrs) and not sure how accurate the timing has to be.

I don't remember exactly but I think it was around 7.6. I started getting bigger and bigger and had a private scan that showed baby was big but they still didn't consider GD and I didn't know to check. I'm not sure how accurate the timing has to be but at my last test they were running behind and getting flustered. They called in an extra technician to help take bloods so it must be quite important. My DS is healthy and fine and my blood sugar went back to normal after birth but I had to have an EMCS which I might otherwise have avoided (who know?) and I think getting so huge really put a strain on my body and I had a difficult recovery. I also had excess amniotic fluid which I believe is linked to GD. With that reading at 25 weeks I would really insist on another test.

Thanks Osterly. When you say you got bigger and bigger do you mean your bump? Or did you put on a lot of weight? I have 'only' put on 2 stone so far from pre-pregnancy weight - 32+3 at the minute) so haven't gone mad (but then was overweight to start with). Due to have ELCS at 39 weeks.

UPDATE: Getting stressed now because today I am 32+6 and estimated baby weight at scan was 6.5lbs! I've actually lost some weight and this morning was 1 st 8lbs over pre-pregnancy weight. Is this normal?

Thank you Emma. Scan today was not 4D just a normal one (quite an old machine though at consultant's house) and think leg measurement was more normal. But 6.5lbs seems huge, especially since I've realised I've lost 4-6lbs in weight in the last week! Is there something wrong with me? Confused

Thanks Emma Thanks - I was getting a bit panic-stricken. He just said she's a bigger than average baby.

Also just found a forum post from a girl who was told her baby was 6lbs at 32 weeks, baby would be huge... and baby was a 'massive' 7lbs 14oz at birth Hmm

Stay calm Angelico, stay calm!

exactly, that does happen, women told they are having huge babies, and they come in at under 8lbs! try not to worry, most women should grow a baby just the right size for them :)

Angelico · 19/08/2012 16:45

Just to update... long story short, I had an ON hospital stay there due to 4+ ketones in urine / severe dehydration. That plus weight loss plus big baby = warning bells. Had a repeat GTT and just 'failed' (7.9, cut off was 7.8) so am being referred to GD specialist this week.

Was actually a really lucky catch (I thought I was leaking AF hence visit to maternity unit) but if you are in doubt get it checked out! Thanks

hi angelico,
i'm glad that you have been checked over and being given the care you need. good luck :)

zoobaby · 20/08/2012 11:26

Hope it all goes well for you Angelico. I have GD and have been pin-pricking and 'shooting up' for a month now. I found it very daunting at the start and spent my first consultation in floods of tears. But it's not as bad as I thought it would be and I find that some preferred foods actually have a really good effect on my sugar levels (too bad I'm gonna be left with 'pasta weight' rather than 'baby weight'). They say my blood glucose will go back to normal as soon as the placenta is out, and they even said that the non-pregnancy sugar levels are more relaxed than the pregnancy sugar levels. BUT I do have to take this as a massive warning that I need to be sensible to prevent any early onset of real-life diabetes in the future.

It's just a major hassle to remember everything and coordinate yourself, but I guess that's going to be part of having a baby anyway! The biggest impact is probably on DP because I can't be as flexible with eating times as I was.

You just do what you have to do to keep baby healthy.

As a result of my GD, they've been monitoring growth very closely. At one stage it looked like baby was above average size, but latest scan shows that baby is at higher end of the realms of normal. Sonographer explained that it could be because some measurements are taken on slight angle - like they can't get the exact circumferences due to positioning of baby on the day. That kind of thing.

One thing to be aware of though. I'm told that they will bring baby early, either through induction or caesarian. Usually 38-39 weeks. Being in your 33rd week now, you'd best find out from your hospital what they do. Mine will let me know my options after the 36 week scan and we will write a birth plan then. Oh yeah, I also think that the birthing centre is out of bounds and that I'll be on the floor where all the doctors and machines are.

Best wishes.

Hi Zoobaby thanks so much for the message :) Just back online today after house move and actually had hospital appt this morning. They gave me finger pricker (daunting I agree, especially as they were in a rush and barely showed me how to use it Confused) but haven't had ANY dietary advice beyond 'Don't eat sweets or too much fruit'. Apparently I have to wait to see dietician - v helpful when they have given me a tiny range of blood sugar numbers and no clue how to keep to them Hmm What did you find helpful to eat?

It's funny they said that to me too about the real diabetes numbers being much more relaxed than the gestational diabetes! No insulin for me so really want to keep things under control with diet.

Hope all is going well with your pregnancy :) I'm now 34+4 could be having this baby in 3.5 weeks Confused
