I'm 33 weeks at the mo and DH and I a pretty organised. We've bought some basics baby grows/vests etc in newborn size from John Lewis plus bits and bobs from other places in various sizes from newborn up to 6-9 months (most of the bigger stuff we got coz it was cute and in the sale) I'm not sure we've got quite enough basics stuff for when she's born (pack of 5 long sleeved baby grows and 5 vests) plus a few newborn 'nice' outfits. My friend came over thing week with her 3 month old, she said he has only just outgrown the John Lewis newborn size and that she needed some tiny baby stuff for him when he first arrived. He was 7.2lbs when he was born. This doesn't sound tiny to me! I'm now wondering if we should get some tiny baby packs or stick with newborn or should I wait until much closer to dd? When do the MW start giving you an estimate of weight? (I know these tend to be pretty off but might give us an idea of if tiny baby stuff is worth it)

We had the same discussion earlier today as newborn looks quite big and small babies run in my family. Our plan is to stick with newborn clothes (you can always roll up sleeves and it's not as if he / she will be walking so leg length is less of an issue). My Mum did this with me as early baby / tiny baby clothes didn't exist in the 70s. If the baby is very small then DH or my Mum can do a quick shopping trip.....

Id stick with newborn, shops are still open. dh popped down to tescos when we gt home to get a pack of three vests and pack of three sleepsuits in tiny baby as dd was 6lb11.

Well DS was 8lb15oz and he started in newborn (up to 10lbs) - some shops have different "newborn" size so check the label for the "up to xxlbs".

He was in "newborn" for a couple of weeks.

I would say you will need more than 5 babygrows/vests. Dont forget you'll probably want one or two in your changing bag!

We ended up buying more last time - ended up with 10 of each I think, maybe 12. You can get through 4 a day EASILY!

My son when born was 7.5lbs and was in tiny baby! I'd get one pack of tiny baby grows as we had to send out my parents to get some for us and they were uh... interesting!

And agree with 10 or 12 of each size baby grow

I found john Lewis quite large. DD always fits their clothes at the end of the age range. I bought 3 tiny baby sleepsuits and she wore these for about 2 weeks and then wore new born. I think we bought from supermarket, pumpkin patch and mothercare initially. However, we did roll sleeves for a while. Oh and she was 7 lb 2 oz at birth.
As an aside, JL basics are brilliant.

I find John Lewis stuff comes up big. My daughter was 7lb 2oz and was in John Lewis tiny baby for 2/3 weeks (and various other newborn size babygros which were too big but came up smaller than the John Lewis stuff). I think it is more down to the length - she wasn't terribly long and when she outgrew the tiny baby stuff she was too long rather than too wide for it. I had to send my parents out to get the tiny babygros as she was totally swamped in the newborns, but we only got 3 or 4 as I thought they really wouldn't be used much. She was in JL newborn until about 12 weeks too. It seemed a size behind for her! 0-3 was actually worn from about 3 months.

She is actually fairly tall now!

Graciescotland · 04/08/2012 18:46

John Lewis newborn is big, DS fit in them to six weeks and he was 8lb 9.5oz. We bought mainly 0-3 as we were expected a big baby. Ten pounders run in the family thankfully DS was a little bit early. Ended up getting stuff in next as jl don't have built in scratch mitts.

DeathMetalMum · 04/08/2012 18:52

Dd was 8lb8oz so on the larger size, my midwife estimated that she would be about 7lbs so quite out really. We had various newborn packs from various ahops. Think we had about 12 vests in total (plus hand me downs). Dd's first outfit well baby grow in newborn size (from mothercare) only fitted her the once. I find it really helpfull having things from different shops as they help for the inbetween stages where one size is too small and the next too big.

Thanks guys, think we might invest in a pack of tiny baby. When did your MW give you an estimate of weight? I'm measuring about a cm less than my weeks (if that makes sense - 31 cm at 32 weeks) and I'm quite small (was an 8/10 and 5'3") so I'm not expecting her to be huge (although everyone else is as my DH is 6'4" but MW said that wont make much difference to baby size as his growth spurt was around 19yo)

I wouldn't say weight was that great an indicator, in my experience, it's more about the leg and body length.

DD1 (born weighing 6lb 11oz) was quite small all round and stayed in newborn babygrows until she was 3 months old.

DD2 (who weighed 7lb exactly) had (still has) rather long legs, and had outgrown newborn size babygrows at 5 days old.

BikeRaceRunningRaceNoSkiing · 04/08/2012 20:12

I agree with needing about 12 "outfits" - mainly babygrows and vests for a newborn.

Different shops have different weights for different sizes, but also babies are different shapes and sizes for their weight. DS was long and skinny and 7lb 10oz. He was in "up to 9lb" for about 3 weeks before he grew out of it, despite being lighter, because his body is so long.

DD in other hand is shorter and fatter and was in the same clothes for weeks longer.

sparklekitty · 04/08/2012 20:22

Ah, good point maamekin. I guess a basics pack of tiny baby and one or two of newborn and can get extras of little ones as and when needed? I'm the first of our group to have a baby so unused/little used can be saved and given away as and when others start having LO's

As said above DS was 8lb15 and I was measuring a cm under for quite a while!!! Certainly never measured over. Was size 8-10 pre-preg. I dont think bump size really means much!
