Baby sleeping arrangements?

Hi all

So I understand that the baby should sleep in the same room as us for the first six months - but we wanted to do the 'nursery' thing and get a room ready so that the baby has its own room - it feels weird not to do that really - but then if it's not sleeping in there what is it actually for?

We had planned to get a cot in there, and I had been thinking fine the baby can go in there for daytime sleeps - it will be painted nice and babystyle - as opposed to our room - so more lovely and restful etc...

But then what does it sleep in at night time in our room? We can't be moving the cot every morning and evening between the nursery at one end of our hall and our room at the other.

Are you meant to have a crib or some such other thing in the bedroom? Aside from anything else am not sure a cot would fit in our bedroom...

I also read that the baby shouldnt sleep next to a radiator which is another issue as we dont have any other space!

Confused...

Grateful for advice!

I'm due this winter also, and we also have a stupidly small bedroom with only room to walk round the bed!! But we're going decorage the nursery and get all the furniture set up, but have bambino in a moses basket in with us for the first few months until they're ready to sleep in the nursery. I suppose you just have to do what feels right, and it will still be nice to have the nursery all set up until they're sleeping in there full time because i'm sure you'll have clothes, toys and gifts etc to put in there? (we've gone on the thought that we won't have time to set up a nursery when they arrive!)

I have heard that they aren't to sleep near a radiator as they could overheat.

Just do what's right and what works for you - and I'm sure your mothers instinct will kick in and you won't trip over them!!!

My (3) babies have all slept in our bed next to me, I found this much easier for bfeeding, I didn't really need to wake up to feed. We also had a dropside cot next to the bed with #2 and #3 and sometimes moved baby into there.

I believe it's not advisable to sleep with your baby if anyone in the bed has been drinking or smoking. I def agree with others that there is an in-built awareness of your baby even when sleeping, I have really happy nostalgic memories of the early co-sleeping, there's nothing like it.

Always used moses basket too so that I could move baby wherever I was going, none of mine ever minded normal levels of household noise. I think to start with we put the basket in the cot at bedtime as baby was usuallly already asleep in it.

Never done the nursery thing but I understand the urge to do it!

Just sharing my experience.
Dd is now 6months (dc3).

Dd has co slept since birth so no need for cot in our room but we have one as i used one with dcs1+2. we have a travel cot with newborn insert in our room but would recomend co sleeping to anyone who bfs and wants a good nights sleep.

We have a cot bed (changes into toddler bed) in dds bedroom for when she moves in there.

Downstairs we have a moses basket. Dd is not a tiny baby but at 6 mn

With regards to radiators, do you have induvidual thermostats on them? If so you could just turn off the bedroom/nursery ones when your babys in there.

thanks guys - so good to read all the different ways of doing it and definitely reassuring that there are lots of options that work.

the radiator thing can be sorted am sure - just turn them off in those rooms like you say

Louby sounds like we are in similar situation! small bedrooms a nightmare and cant even shift stuff our because all in-built wardrobe etc.

I am looking forward to doing the nursery though I have to admit - and shall use it as a changing room and place to sit in the chair and have a tranquil environment to feed in!

so much to think about - so easy to get paranoid - sorry all about the paranoia of standing on my own baby - seems a bit silly now! confided concern in DH who laughed at me (nicely), feeling bit better about that now!
