Gaviscon - Does anyone stick to the dosage instructions??

As it says in the title. Does anyone stick to the dosage instructions for Gaviscon?

I am taking the advanced tablets and seem to be taking them constantly. They do work....for a bit and so long as I don't eat or drink anything but I am finding that everything that enters my mouth is having to be followed by a Gaviscon chaser Blush

Am I harming myself or the wee one by popping them like smarties??

I don't. I'm like you - popping them like sweets till I get some relief!

cairnterrier · 02/08/2012 12:30

I found that the tablets were useless and the liquid stuff much better.

GrassIsntGreener · 02/08/2012 12:31

Hi, I've given up on rennie and gaviscon and now have been prescribed rinitidine by the docs. Two a day, sorted.

Londonmrss · 02/08/2012 12:32

Only thing to be careful of is if you're anaemic. My midwife said too much of the stuff can interfere with iron absorption, so make sure you're getting enough iron and vitamin c.

I can't live without them either, although as far as the tablets go, I prefer Rennie because Gaviscon get stuck in my teeth!

GizzyBoo · 02/08/2012 12:42

Ah great, thanks. I like the tablets. They work better for me than the liquid but they do stick to your teeth eh!

No worries on the anemia as bloods at 28 weeks showed hb 12.2 (31 weeks now) but thanks for the heads up.

I shall just put my repeat prescription in again then Grin

The problem with taking them constantly is your body starts to up the acid to try and counter act it so you end up with much worse acid reflux than you started with.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 02/08/2012 19:42

I have a large bottle of the liquid and a straw.

AmandinePoulain · 02/08/2012 20:31

If you are needing that much it might be worth trying something else - I've been on omeprazole since 24 weeks and I'm a new woman Grin. I hardly need gaviscon anymore, and I can eat whatever I want without being up half the night afterwards!

Blueaddie · 02/08/2012 20:32

I am drinking the stuff. It says on the bottle have a spoonful after every meal but I haven't used a spoon for months.......just down it from the bottle.

At the moment everything including water (and possibly oxygen) gives me acid so I have a bottle of Gaviscon with me at all times.

They should do Gaviscon hip flasks for pregnant women.

jenbird · 02/08/2012 21:33

I am at the point where I am wondering if Gaviscon counts towards my daily drinks guidelines. Another bottle glugger!

Runningblue · 02/08/2012 21:52

Nope! I have a swig out of the bottle, somehow it doesn't take so revolting when you don't have to slurp it off the spoon...

Angelico · 02/08/2012 22:05

Omeprazole might work better for you if you are really struggling. The double action liquid works for me although on a bad day might have to take it twice. I am also a bottle swigger, much to DH's mingled amusement and disgust... :o

MoonHare · 02/08/2012 22:09

Ha ha!

I'm a 'glug it straight from the bottle' girl too. Have raging indigestion, posted about this the other week.

Think a trip to the GP might be in order. There is not enough Gaviscon in the world....

bonzo77 · 02/08/2012 22:15

I just swig from the bottle too. And suck the tablets. I find the "advance" stuff better than the normal one. My obstetrician said once the gaviscon stops working I should be on ranitidine (zantac) and once that is not working go for omeprazole. The reason being that there is more safety data on ranitidine in pregnancy than for omeprazole (though I did have both in my last pregnancy, not together though, they are not compatible I think).

peeriebear · 02/08/2012 22:18

I have a bottle next to me as I type... I have got through two big bottles of the Advance stuff in a couple of weeks. It's the evenings that get me.
The tablets are foul, the liquid marginally less so, the lesser of two evils by a very small margin.

Rachog · 02/08/2012 22:19

I just drank it straight from the bottle too, I had a bottle at home, one on my desk at work and a box of tablets in my bag for inbetween.

Rachog · 02/08/2012 22:20

Oh just a thought, I found Asda's own brand worked better and.tasted nicer.than branded gaviscon and was cheaper too.

AliceHurled · 02/08/2012 22:23

Rachog, do you know you can get it on prescription, so free with exemption thing? You shouldn't be paying for gaviscon in pregnancy

Rachog · 02/08/2012 22:35

Thanks alicehurled, I don't need it now, ds is 17 days old. I did know but hardly saw my midwife and forgot to ask when I did. Baby brain!

jen6jen · 02/08/2012 23:15

I agree with the omeprazole gang!! I took it with my last baby cos it was recommended by a close friend who's a district nurse who was also taking it. Never looked back!!! It did my son absolutely no harm at all and made what was turning into pregnancy from hell into a more enjoyable experience. Jen xx

flavialee · 30/08/2012 10:44

Zantac is also very effective for indigestion.

ZuleikaD · 30/08/2012 12:13

Another straight-from-the-bottler here. The MW prescribes me two huge bottles at a go and I get through about two a month during pregnancy.

newtonupontheheath · 30/08/2012 13:00

I swig straight from the bottle and have a bottle at work, in the kitchen and the bedroom. So I'm never too far from it!!

I don't even know what the dosage is Blush
