Cystic Hygroma???

Hi everyone,
I am new to this site but I needed some help and advice...
On Tuesday I went for my first scan and they dated me at 10+2 days into my pregnancy.
There was a heartbeat and baby was wriggling around so I thought great everything is fine!
Then the sonographer told me she was just taking some measurements and would take me into the next room, that can't be good...
Turns out my baby has something called cystic hygroma, fluid measuring 3mm around it's head, neck and extending around it's body.
Obviously I am upset and confused as I have never heard of this. I have another appointment on Wednesday at Birmingham's fetal medicene centre for a CVS.
Please could anyone give me any advice if you have been through this, what happens throughout pregnancy and what the outcome was.
I am nervous that I am going to have to decide whether or not to keep my baby and the thought makes me feel sick :( please help xxx

Hi, I'm afraid I don't know about this condition (I had a CVS but due to different issues) but just wanted to suggest that you could also try posting in the Antenatal Tests and Choices section where people may have more relevant experience?

Hi Philippa, really sorry you are going through this it's horrible. I had the exact same situation you describe but an even higher amount of fluid (5mm at 1st scan and then 7mm a week later) plus fluid around the baby's organs.

I had the CVS, was fine just a little uncomfortable, the worst part was the waiting. Sadly for me the outcome was not good, the baby had a terminal prognosis so i ended the pregnancy. It was a horrible time but i went on to have a healthy son and am now prgenant again and all seems ok this time.

I know the odds are not on your side and i don't want to give you false hope but don't give up - some people in similar circumstances do end up getting the all clear, i hope this is the case for you. I would definately visit the antenatal test/choices area as minipie said as there are lots of people there who have been through the same.

Best of luck and take care xxx

Thank you! I am sorry to hear about your tough time but glad thongs worked out in the end. I have read a few peoples experiences and it seems that each case is different. I guess I will just have to see what the results show next week xx

Hi phillipa, so sorry you are going through this. Happened to us a few years back. My baby's cystic hygroma was much more pronounced, 8mm at 12 weeks, and extended all the way down the back. A consultant did a detailed cardiac scan which may be the way for you to go, since cardiac abnormalities may cause the fluid build up which causes the cystic hygroma.

In our case, although no cardiac defects were found at that scan, there was clearly something going v wrong with our baby's development early on in gestation to have such a huge cystic hygroma. We were given v poor statistics re the baby surviving in utero and being delivered safely. Therefore our decision to end the pregnancy was the absolutely right one for us, although it was still extremely sad.

We had some tissue tested for chromosomal abnormalities, and we were reassured that nothing was wrong here. It gave us the courage to try again. The trauma of having that baby would have prevented the possibility of having another healthy one for us.

I'm not sure if the prognosis is necessarily so dire in smaller ones. This is something, as well as cardiac scanning, and chromosomal testing, that you need to ask your consultant about.

I think that what you have to do is gather your thoughts and think about how a worst-case scenario is going to impact you and your family unit. And whether you want to brave that.

I am sorry I cannot give you any hope and I wish you and your partner lots of strength. Go easy on yourself.

Our baby has a cystic hygroma (NT 11.4mm) and hydrops, so we knew from that scan that the baby was going to die. We didn't have a termination though and chose to carry DD until she died at 18 weeks. No cause was found at post-mortem and her chromosomes were normal.

I hope the Fetal Medicine are able to give you more information today. I'm sorry about it all and hope your outcome can be very different.

Hi Philippasmout, How have you been getting on? Just to let you know my baby also had lots of fluid round the back of the head, neck (Nuchal 4mm) and back all the way to the bottom. We had a CVS and inital results fine but still waiting for full results. However, within a week, and still within the date window for Nuchal translucency measurment, all the fluid dissapeared and the Nuchal went well below the risk level. I do not know what will happen in your case, but just wanted to add my experience in case it helps.
Really hope all is going okay with you. I totally understand that you feel sick with the worry. Wishing you all the best.
