5 weeks pregnant - Previous treatment for abnormal cells - Reassurance

Hi all

I found out early this week that I'm approx 5 weeks, got my doc appt next Tues. All I keep doing is worrying about everything however, I'm so nervous about how things are going to go. Nearly 2 years ago I had a LLETZ procedure done after abnormal cells were found. This is adding to my anxiousness obviously. Was wondering if anyone else was in a similar situation and all was well? (I know everyone is different obviously). Was wondering if the doc may put me forward for an earlier scan because of this also? Getting myself so worried, not told any family yet so all my worries are just swimming around my head!
Thanks so much ! x

Hiya - I had a LLETZ a year ago and am currently 34 weeks pregnant with my first. I felt the same as you, so when I had my first midwife appt I mentioned this and she put it in my notes so that when I had my 20 week scan they checked the length of my cervix as well. I also had a quick chat with a consultant. Pleased to say all was fine. Hope this helps! X

I had LLETZ treatment in February 2011 and fell pregnant February this year, currently 25 weeks. I too was massively worried because of the treatment but so far everything has been fine... Touch wood. They wouldn't give me an early scan on the Nhs, because the LLETZ treatment wouldn't have an impact on pregnancy so early on. Although I paid for one privately for my own piece of mind. As far as I am aware the LLETZ treatment has an impact on the strength of your cervix putting you at a slightly higher risk of late miscarriage, however if you have only had the treatment once then the risk is minimal. Plus the gynae who did my treatment said that if it looked like that was going to happen they could put a stitch in. Also you have given your body plenty of time to recover before getting pregnant which can only be a good thing. The only thing that I pushed for was an appointment with the consultant so that I could get my cervix measured at 23 weeks. My MW kept trying to fob me off but eventually caved when I kept mentioning it at every appointment. My cervix measured the right length & looked exactly as it should for 23 weeks, they're gonna measure me again at 32 weeks to make sure it has continue to lengthen enough.
I hope this has helped put your mind at rest. I know exactly how you are feeling, it is really worrying but plenty of women have LLETZ and go on to have happy, healthy pregnancies. Smile
Oh yeah, and CONGRATS on getting pregnant! Grin

I'm in a similar position. At my midwife booking in appointment they noted it as part of my history and then referred me for a consultant's appointment the following week (week 11).

The consultant was not overly worried and put in my notes that at the 12 week scan they should also measure the length of my cervix (warning - this is an internal scan!). I am also due to go for an extra cervical scans next week at 16 weeks and then at 18 weeks, 20 weeks (although I am sure they will combine during the anomoly scan) and 22 weeks. Then back to the consultant for a check at 26 weeks.

Not sure what happens after that! But they obviously keep an eye on it and if worried they will put a stitch in. Although my care plan seems a bit overkill compared to Rubberducky's!

Try not to worry, you will be looked after. It's not an unusual treatment to have had and complications are very rare.

Hi ladies

Thank you so much for your help! Has really reassured me. Sorry, forgot to mention it's my first also. So my head is wondering about so many things. Glad to hear you've both had nice healthy pregnancies so far. The worrying and waiting is killing me! Can't wait for my first scan! This website has been such a life saver for answering questions, trying to keep things quiet until I know everything is well with bubba!
Thank you so much ladies, wishing you a lovely pregnancy

Hi, I had same treatment several years ago and although it was mentioned and written in my notes....no one seemed particularly worried about it and I didn't see a consultant. I have a 22 month old and another one due in 7 weeks so all fine here. Good luck x

I had a LLETZ procedure in October due to extensive cell changes (so a large area excised/burnt/whatever it is they do to get rid of the cells) and had a big bleed in theatre which meant I needed 'packing' (nice). I carried on bleeding until March but found I was pg with DD4 in early February (if IIRC!) when I was about 6w so I had a few scans to find out why I was bleeding or if the pg was ectopic but everything was fine.

I had a extra scan at 18w to check cervical length and everything was fine so I didn't need a cerclage or any further cervical scans. I am 33w now Grin

Hope you get some extra reassurance from your cons (either Gynae one or Obs).

Hi there - I think LEEP is the same as LLETZ? I was really worried about this too as I had one 10 years ago in the States. However, I called attention to it really early, and mentioned it at my 12-week scan. At my hospital they also do an internal scan to check the length of your cervix and uterine blood flow, and they did this for me. Everything looked great. They told me to make sure and ask for it at the following two scans as well, to make sure. I was very reassured. Don't worry too much. :)

Hi there I am in a similar position - had LLETZ 2 years ago and currently 8+3 weeks pregnant.

I am concerned too, but as it is early days and I have informed the midwife, I am happy that they will do everything necessary.

My main worry is actually giving birth. I am worried about the "stretchiness" of my cervix and whether or not it will dilate properly. But I am saving that chat for a bit further on in the pregnancy!!

At least there are a few of us in it together!

I have had 2 LLETZ treatments in the past (8 years apart), the last one being a year before my eldest child was born. They were very aware of it during my first pregnancy and measured the length of my cervix and so on (which was always normal) and she went full-term, in fact 5 days overdue, and no problems with labour or delivery. I have since gone on to have two more children with no problems, all full-term and am now expecting my fourth! No-one checks the length of my cervix anymore!! I think if they are concerned they will put a stitch in but try not to worry too much; I think as someone else said above, complications because of previous LLETZ treatments are very rare. Good luck for your pregnancy.
