Has anyone had severe SPD in one pregnancy and no similar problems in a subsequent pregnancy?

My PFB is only 3 months old and I'm just soooooooooo broody for number 2! I had a really difficult pregnancy though, with severe SPD (pain in my hips due to ligament problems) from week 21. I was on crutches and barely able to walk from week 24. For the last month of the pregnancy I should really have been in a wheelchair, but my house wouldn't accommodate one.

Being in constant pain and housebound for four months is not an experience I ever want to repeat. Particularly if there's a high chance the SPD could start even earlier in a subsequent pregnancy. So I'm curious as to whether or not anyone who has been as significantly affected by SPD as me in the past, has gone on to have another pregnancy where this symptom didn't recur?

I'm sorry to tell you it's extremely likely you will suffer again. I have had it three times. My second pg was 8months after my first baby and lots of people said SPD would be worse with such a close gap. This is nonsense- my third pg 5 years later was the worst of all.

My advice is obviously go for it, the baby more than makes up for it in my experience, and this is coming from someone who was housebound and on crutches from 28 weeks.

Definitely acquaint yourself with a chiro or physio experienced with it, it is worth paying for it. There is a wonderful lady near Cheltenham that is one of the leading experts in the field.

I did a thread on this a month or so back. Was about 90% that had it again.
I only had it with dd3 but am now pg again so waiting to see what happens

Yep, another coming on to say that it will probably reoccur, sorry! Smile

Has SPD from about 26 weeks with DD1. Came on at about 18 weeks with DD2 and am now 31 weeks pregnant with DS1 and I first felt the pain at 11 weeks.....have had lots of help from physio etc this time though as I know how to self refer etc and get the help I need........

I did and I am almost 23 weeks with my second and not feeling any spd yet. I have been taking it a lot easier this time dispite having a toddler. I'm not lifting/carrying her when I can avoid it and I am using buses rather than walking.
I lost a good amount of weight between my pregnancies too which I think has helped.
I may still get it but I had it by 16 weeks the last time and could barely walk by 7 months. It also lasted quite a while after but only twinges.

good luck!

I had nasty SPD with pg #1 which did not fully abate until over 2 years after birth. I have spent the past 5 years trying all I can to undo the damage and invest in ways to control it. I have found the following most useful: good mattress, preferably with memory foam top, good arch supports in flat shoes, core strength exercises, various types of manual manipulation to realign things, identification of my psoas muscles being tight and learning how to stretch them when things are not right.

The good news is that a combination of the above, plus learning where my limits are and really avoiding all lifting and excessive bending have meant that my second and third pregnancies have been much better.

During my first pregnancy I had no SPD, however as a result if the delivery I suffered really badly for the next year it so, physio, strapping crutches etc.

Three years later, second pregnancy and from about 18 weeks onwards had great difficulty, from about week 30 onwards I couldn't really walk or drive successfully so was induced early. However post delivery that time I had very few problems, just niggles if I moved in the wrong way.

Third pregnancy was a whole other story, no SPD, before or after. Little twinges if I got out of bed wrong and certain positions in yoga and Pilates are off limits. But otherwise pretty much fine.

Hope this helps. From my experience it isn't as simple ad, you've had it once, you're guaranteed to have it again.
