Statutory mat pay

Friend of mine is on stat mat pay in a convenience store. The store was flooded and needs a refit which will be done after the summer, which will take two weeks . My friend intends to start mat leave on 1st October- due date 11th Nov. the shop owner is mumbling about her either taking two weeks holiday or starting her mat leave to cover these two weeks of the refit. She has been led to believe that the insurance claim will cover the wages during the refit time. surely she should not have to take holiday or start mat leave???

No she shouldn't, they can't make you use either for that reason. If boss being unreasonable either go to head office hr, union or CAB.

I'd think it depends if she's paid per hour or is salaried. She won't have to start maternity leave, but if I was paid hourly I wouldn't expect to get paid if I'm not working iyswim. Her best bet is to make an appointment with the citizen's advice bureau imho.

Mmm ! Can see your point about being paid hourly but if the insurance is covering the wages during the refit then I don't think she should penalised.
