Waters broken and no contractions, what is the norm?

I am pregnant with my third child and 3 days overdue. Yesterday my waters broke at four pm but I have had no contractions yet and now it is 29 hrs gone by and still nothing. Feeling scared. Midwives came and said not to worry and no risk of infection as I don't have a temperature. They have told me to wait until Saturday. I sure hope something will happen soon as this is so annoying with waters broken and so heavily pregnant in this heat!

I was told I'd be given 'upto 48 hours' for contractions to start once my waters broke. In the end, they started after 8 hours but they should have a max time they'll allow before inducing you. Have they mentioned that at all?

My waters broke 6am, Hosp told to go straight in for monitoring, was to return the next day for more monitoring then be induced after 48 hours. Luckily my contractions started and DD was born same day. Hope your labour starts soon and you a lovely newborn soon Smile

My pct say 18 hours now. Used to be 36, then 24. If you are worried ring.

Just fed up cos with dd two weeks overdue waters broke and was not induced until 3 days after waters broke! Hope this won't be a repeat! The principle in local hosp is to wait 92hrs!

Waters broke 2am sat induction started 11am Monday, baby born 12.30am tuesday. If induced on the drip- take the drugs!

Mine went 6am with dd1. I went into labour 9pm same day, but was 'given 48hrs' as others have said.

My sister's waters broke at about 9am on the Wednesday. She had to go in that day to be checked over and discuss what would happen.
She went again on the Thursday and was told she had to come back in the afternoon and she'd need to stay in. The consultant decided she needed to be induced that night, so approx 36 hours after waters breaking.
The mw's on the ward decided not to give her the induction for some reason.
Her contractions started at 2am Friday morning. By 9am she was only 1cm dilated but suddenly showing signs of infection and her DD's HB was dropping during contractions.
By midday there was no further dilation, more sign of infection, her DD's HB dropping to 60-70 during contractions. We still don't know all the details but they did all get a bit stressed at that point.
She was rushed through to theatre for EMCS and her DD was born healthy at 1pm.

I'd make sure you get plenty of monitoring and knowing who I know now, I would insist on an induction if I was in a similar situation to my sister.

Waters broke at 36+4 on Thursday 11pm.
Went into hospital at 6am Friday.
Induction started 8am Sat, as local policy was 24 hours.
DS born by EMCS 1.30am Sun.

If you are concerned pls phone. Good luck.

My waters broke on the Tuesday 9am, contractions started coming irregularly a few hours later and continued very irregularly throughout the day until nightfall, labour established 3am, baby born 4.30pm Wednesday.

In your position I would be glad of a "watch and wait" expectant management approach. Your waters have gone, so your body is definitely gearing up for labour. Monitor your temp. for signs of infection, and trust your body and your midwife. All will be well. No need for meducal interference yet.

My waters went at midnight with no contractions. I was brought into hospital the next evening at 6pm (so 18 hours later) and put on a drip of antibiotics to prevent infection. I was told baby had to be born within 48 hours of waters breaking under the hospital's guidelines. Ended up being induced and DD was born 42 hrs after waters went.

I second the advice to take the drugs if you end up being induced - the contractions were awful: much worse than the natural ones I (eventually!) developed.

Personally I'd call and ask about the policy on antibiotics. Nothing to lose.
