Sushi/ Laser hair removal/ Underwired bras

Hi all,

I've recently found out I'm 7 weeks pregnant with my first baby and want to make sure I do things right. The internet is full of opinions on what is safe and not safe during pregnancy. I have three questions where opinions definitely seem to be divided, so I thought I would find out what everyone thinks on here.

  1. Can I eat sushi or not? Some websites say a blanket no, others say it's fine as long as the raw fish has been frozen beforehand.
  1. Can I have laser hair removal? I've had a couple of treatments in the past few months (before I got pregnant) for stray hairs on my chin and upper lip and have another appointment in a couple of weeks but am not sure whether to go or not.
  1. Should I switch to non-underwired bras? I'm a 34E so most of the bras I buy are underwired but I've read that this can cause issues for breastfeeding.

Thanks in advance Smile

No idea about the sushi (wimp and didn't in either pg) or hair removal but definitely get your bra size checked. I carried on in underwired bras for too long and they were too small. I ended up with antenatal mastitis. It was very painful and worrying. On the plus side, it had no effect whatsover on my subsequent bf. Your back size will go up - that's the thing to check. Maybe try some soft cup bras. The shape isn't brilliant but neither is a really high mastitis temperature!

Good luck with the pregnancy Smile

I was half way through a course of laser hair removal and had to stop when I got pregnant. Partly as you're more likely to have a tan when pregnant (as you're more sensitive to light), but the main concern is with pigmentation problems. Apparently you're also more prone to uneven, and permanent (!), pigmentation patches during pregnancy, especially on your face. So, the lasers could provoke that reaction and then you'd have patches of skin discolouration.

It may not happen but the clinic I was going to wouldn't continue and when I phoned around to check, I was given the same info elsewhere.

Hmph, I shall remain hairy for now...

I don't like sushi but I have read from several sources that sushi in the UK is safe because it is pre-frozen.

I wore undersire bras throughout pregnancy but had to change size about 3 times to ensure a good fit. I'm still favouring underwired nursing bras as I can't find a non-wired one that gives me a decent shape.

I had one session left of a course of laser hair removal when I found out I was pregnant. The salon refused to do the final treatment.
