Very few antihistamines are recommended in pregnancy. I'd ice the are and wait until you can speak to a GP

MrsHoolie · 25/07/2012 07:52

I'm pretty sure you can't take any anti-histamines in pregnancy, sorry!
Perhaps you can get to a pharmacy and find out if you can use the bite creams?

MrsHelsBels74 · 25/07/2012 07:54

I had a nasty allergic reaction in pregnancy & was prescribed piriton by a consultant obstetrician so think it's ok. I would probably check with a pharmacist first before taking though, not take a random stranger off the internet's word.

I suffer from bad eczema and hay fever, and my GP said it was ok to use certain antihistamines while pregnant - specifically the ones which make you drowsy, rather than non-drowsy ones. Do speak to your own GP to double check but when my symptoms are bad, I do take a tablet and all is (seemingly) well. (25wks with DC2. And I occasionally took antihistamines with DD while pg with her)

I would check with doc first. I guess if you've had it before you should be OK.
I took piriton when I was 30+ weeks pregnant and I think it knocked out the baby! Didn't feel it kick for a long time and got quite worried. Mind you, piriton has that effect on me too - I just can't take it.

hzgreen · 25/07/2012 08:25

Def check wit hte doc first but i have dermographism and can't function without antihistamines, i was told to try and avoid them in the first trimester if possible but i couldn't and they said that was ok. but there are different types and your doc will prescribe the best ones. i don't think piriton is the mildest one to take in pregnancy but i'm no expert.

AKMD · 25/07/2012 08:54

I'm also prescribed Piriton. The prescribing doctor was a consultant obstetrician before becoming a GP so I'm taking her word for it that it's ok. I wouldn't take anything else though, not even over-the-counter Piriton, just in case!

DonnaDoon · 25/07/2012 10:13

Big No from the docs, just cream ...oh well...thanks folks.

I was told during pregnancy that no anti-histamine is officially cleared for use during pregnancy, although that's because hardly anything is; it's practically speaking impossible to run trials because then you're treating women and their foetuses as guinea pigs. However, for many doctors the accepted wisdom is that drugs that have been used for many years will very likely have been used by a fair number of pregnant women without any significant number of mishaps, so they have in a sense proved that they are reasonable safe (as much as anything is) by being in use for that period of time. My doctor said go for the older anti-histamines for that reason, rather than the newer, non-drowsy ones.

Dahlen · 25/07/2012 10:25

AFAIA, there are no proven risks with taking antihistamines in pregnancy, but because there has been limited research into the effect on the foetus, most doctors use a risk/reward balance. If the complaint is minor it's not worth taking the risk, but if the symptoms are bad the risks are minimal enough to make it worthwhile.

Why not try something topical? Something like wasp-eze is brilliant.

BadgerFace · 25/07/2012 13:31

I bought some of this www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/sp+green-baby-after-bite-roll-on-in-bathtime-and-healthcare+B7750 yesterday assuming it would be okay for being pregnant as it is okay for kids.

Not had to try it yet so don't know how effective it is but might be worth a try?

LoopyLa · 25/07/2012 13:44

OP, Benadryl was suggested to me by a pharmacist...

americaninbritain · 26/07/2012 11:16

I went to my GP yesterday with a similar question and there is only one allergy med she said you can't take, and you have to have a prescription for it anyway, so you should be fine with the OTC meds.
