Stupid c-section question

RubyrooUK · 23/07/2012 20:30

I've been told by a specialist consultant that after a labour that left me with terrible tears and injuries, I will have to have an elective c-section for future children.

I have accepted this as I was very very lucky to be able to have physio after the birth and surgery and avoid incontinence from both ends. All doctors seeing me are amazed I've healed so well.

Anyway, I am terrified of going into labour before the date of a c-section and having to give birth naturally, resulting in injuries that leave me incontinent this time.

So, if I did go into labour before my scheduled elective c-section date, would they do an emergency c-section in that case? Anyone with any experience in this area?

Thank you!

Yes they would - I'm a MW
Good luck

Hi, yes they would. My situation wasn't as serious as yours and I had an elective booked following a first emergency one. Went into labour early and they treated it as emergency and I went straight in.

They would do an emcs yes, you would need to contact your labour ward the second you had any signs so that you could go straight in and they could prepare for you. I'm having a elcs in 4 weeks (previous cs and breech baby who is showing no signs of moving) and that's what I've been told. The only reason I wouldn't get a cs would be if it was far too late for one ie. she was practically out.

Good luck

It really depends how far advanced you are. In most cases (I'm guessing) they have ample warning and can do a section most of the time
I was booked for a section, due to an earlier stillbirth. I then went into early labour that was diagnosed as placental abruption and they did a swift emergency csection. Which was fine. But I wasn't in established labour
I guess the doctors will have taken this all into account, when you went into labour last time, how quickly it was established, and put your section at a date relevant to that
However, I would say that at the slightest twinge, get yourself to the labour ward.
My guess is you will have sufficient time

Ah thank you everyone. Very good of you to reply so quickly and put my mind at rest. I'm sure I'll have more stupid questions to follow.....!

Sorry for a small hijack here Grin but I had a similar question like this - if you have a premature labour (first DS born at 31 wks) will they still do an emergency c-section?

This would be in an elective case rather than for injuries as in the OP's case though...

minceorotherwise · 23/07/2012 20:44

It's not a daft question and given you had such an awful time first time around it's natural to be worried
I'm sure your section will be fine, and honestly it's a breeze compared to vb! And so quick! You'll have your little one before you know it
And be able to wee painlessly Blush

AmandinePoulain · 23/07/2012 20:48

berri it depends on why you are having a cs - there are advantages for premature babies if they are delivered vaginally, it is better for their lungs. Obviously if you ate having a cs for reasons like the op they would still do one, but I was advised that if I go into labour before 36 weeks I would be strongly encouraged to deliver vaginally - but that was before the baby being breech came into it so now I'm not sure.

OP I am due to have ELCS and consultant told me that if I go early it will be treated as an EMCS.

4goingon14 · 23/07/2012 21:03

Yes that is what happened to me. Booked in for an ELCS and went into labour naturally 3 weeks before date of ELCS. Went to hospital and had an EMCS but this was after 8 hours of labouring first as the theatres were full with other more serious emergencies.

I was in fully established labour by the time they brought me in for my section.

TubbyDuffs · 23/07/2012 21:08

Yep, if you have a c-section planned and you go into early labour they will treat it as an emergency c-section.

I had two c-sections, first one planned as breech and second one emergency, and on my third pregnancy, I went into early labour and it was an emergency section.

They don't mess about with these things.

berri · 24/07/2012 01:31

Thanks Amandine they've said I can have a c-sect if I get pregnant again due to a traumatic birth, but maybe I should look into vb again, perhaps counselling Grin

AmandinePoulain · 24/07/2012 09:27

I had counselling berri, and we went through my delivery notes. The counselling mw helped me to get it straight in my head, and supported me in choosing an elcs this time. She was the one who told me that if I go into preterm labour (fx I won't, I'm 35+1 today) I'd be encouraged to try a vbac, but as dd is stubbornly breech at the moment I guess I'd end up with an emcs in that case.

Hope everything works out for you, not long to wait now!
