Iron count stress!

I had the routine iron count blood test done at 27 weeks. I'd seen the midwife at 23 weeks, and she'd given me the form, and told me to go at 27 weeks as by the time she saw me 11 days later, the results would be back. The results weren't back by the time I had my 28 week appointment, nor when she visited me at home at 29 weeks to do my home birth booking visit. She said that she would chase the result, but that if the results weren't ok, we would have heard back sooner. Anyway, I'm 31+4, and have had an antenatal appointment today. As soon as I walked in, she thrust another blood test form at me, and said that the result had come back at 10.6. Bearing in mind that this was four and a half weeks ago, there is every chance that my iron count could be lower (and I've been very tired, having palpitations etc. My main worry is that if it goes below 10 (and stays there), I can't have a home birth. They wouldn't start me on iron tablets now, as the diagnostic level for anaemia at this stage of pregnancy is below 10.5. What's concerning me (although I may be jumping the gun), is that by the time the results come back this time, and I see the midwife again, I'll be 34+4, and if my iron is below 10, it doesn't give me very long to get the level back up. I have been taking Spatone, but the midwife said that it's nothing like as effective as iron tablets. I didn't even want a home birth to start with, but once I'd thought about it and changed my mind, I had my heart set on it. I guess I will just have to see what happens!

Forgive the language, but that's really a bit shit isn't it? Hmm

In your shoes, with an iron count at 10.6 when already taking spatone, I'd try and get a head start by taking a smallish iron tablet supplement as well (once you've had the blood test - so it doesn't skew the results). You know you're likely anaemic now, and a bit of extra iron won't hurt in the slightest; you can review the situation once the results come back in a week.

Disclaimer: I'm in no way a medical professional and, having been led around the mulberry bush with regards my own iron count, the above is my personal opinion only! Blush :o

Moominsummermadness · 23/07/2012 17:21

You're right, Fluffy, it is a bit shit! I think I will get some over-the-counter iron tablets tomorrow, I know that they aren't as strong as prescription ones, but it's worth a try! Especially if it takes another month for the result to come back. I can't believe it took so long- the hospital is literally 5 minutes away from the GP surgery!

It sounds more like a stack of paperwork got lost in your surgery before it could be inputted onto their computer system? :o

How many spatone are you taking a day? Think its upto 2 in pregnancy?
Also, are you eating it with foods containing vit C rather than dairy or tea? Vit C will help with the absorption.

It may be worth getting something which has a load of b vits in as well, as these are also needed for good red blood cells.

Hope your levels go up soon

Moominsummermadness · 23/07/2012 18:03

2 per day, Nextphase. Have been trying all the usual advice too-I have the Spatone in orange juice (helps disguise the metallic taste), have been upping leafy green veg, red meat etc, and have gone off tea anyway. I hadn't realised that dairy can inhibit the absorption, so will cut down on that, and will try to get more b vits! Thanks for your advice.

I don't think its so much cutting back, just have the iron with a vit C rich meal, rather than your tea and cereal first thing in the morning.

Could you face marmite?

Moominsummermadness · 23/07/2012 19:03

Oooh, yes- I love marmite! I hadn't thought of that, and know it's full of B-vits. I'll give that a try too! Now you've mentioned it, I could really eat some marmite on toast, but DH is at work with the car, and I'm at home with DCs, so no chance of popping to the supermarket!

Hi moomin Smile

My hb was also 10.4 at 28 weeks, my mw seemed pleased with that and I don't need a repeat even though I'll be having a cs. I have also felt exhausted in the last few weeks but my hb never gets above 12 at the best of times anyway!

I've been taking vitabiotics feroglobin which is meant to be a gentle way of taking iron, plus it's got loads of b vits in it and they sell it in tescos and sainsburys so easy to get hold of. I've just upped my dose from 10mls to 15mls in preparation for my section 4 weeks today Smile

Hi Amandine!

I think normally, they wouldn't be too concerned, but it's because of the home birth criteria that the midwife is a bit worried. I don't think they'd even have bothered with a repeat blood test if was having a hospital birth, but because it was a bit borderline, and if it has dropped below 10 I won't be able to have a HB. It might all be irrelevant anyway, as if it hasn't dropped from 10.6, I will have nothing to worry about! I was thinking about hiring a birth pool, but will have to hang back from arranging anything like that for a few weeks- I wouldn't want to waste the best part of £100 if I end up having a hospital birth!
I'm surprised that they weren't more concerned about your level with having a CS, as I would have thought that you'd be more likely to end up anaemic with having surgery.
