10 kicks per - what? Hour? Day?

How often do they say you should feel your baby kick per day? Does anybody know? Is it really only 10 times a day? Or per hour - which would be worrying, because I don't feel that many kicks per hour ever!
TIA!

It is per day as far as I know.

I know, I never knew what the whole kick-chart thing meant and worried myself sick about it.

I think it is really more about noticing what's normal for your baby, so that you know if it becomes less frequent iyswim.

Per day.

My babies always kicked more than ten times per hour, but they were busy busy fetuses (feti?).

Calista · 05/03/2006 19:55

Hmm, I thought it was per hour. It's a few years since I was pregnant though so can't remember for sure...

Mum2OneAndOneMore · 05/03/2006 19:56

Yes it is 10 per day Smile

CM's answer is better - it's really about just being aware about what your baby is up to.

My midwife was always really scathing about the kickchart thing. You just need to make sure your baby doesn't suddenly go from 10 kicks per day to 2. Or from 100 to 10.

it is 10 per day.

Mine both kicked a lot more than that though, which now I know them, really doesn't surprise me!

Seems it's ten kicks in four hour time period.

I only did a kick chart with my first (10 years ago now Shock) but it was definitely 10 kicks in a certain period of time - I think it was 8 hours. So you gave youself a start time, say 9 am and then counted kicks until you had 10, or if you didn't have that many kicks in the 8 hour period, you wrote down how many you did have.

I did it religiously every day from 28 weeks on, but never bothered with my next three pregnancies!

biglips · 05/03/2006 20:06

yea it is 10 times per day..... i lost count in the first hour!!

I've been told by midwives it's ten kicks per day (unless that is a radical change from wehat you are used to, e.g. if you go from 500 kicks one day to 12 the next you should probably get it checked out). The Pampers pregnancy email I got sent this week says 10 per hour, but I think that's misleading, my baby seems to sleep for hours then wake up.

If you think you have not felt the baby move for too long, drink a big icy drink and that should wake him up a bit, also try sitting or lying in different positions and prodding a bit. If you still dont feel anything inn a 12 hour period then its worth getting yourself to the midwife or to the antenatal assessment unit for a trace of the baby's heartbeat. Almost every baby starts kicking madly when the trace is on as it bounces soundwaves off them. I went to the hospital last week as I hadn't felt the baby in 24 hours, they put a trace on and immediately the baby kicked away merrily. I was really apologetic to the midwives for wasting their time and they immediately told me that they would rather see every pregnant woman who worried about movements than get some who were too late to come in and have to deliver poorly babies.

Go on what is normal for you and if you're at all worried get to the docs!
