Hi,

Just wondered do I need to go for an anti-d? I've had a small bleed after sex...was told if I had any bleeding that I need to go for a anti-d? I'm sure its maybe just a bit of friction but obviously not sure! Any advice appreciated - what would you do?

Sorry for tmi!

Yes you should. Any cervical bleeding should be treated, the consequences for future babies if you left it untreated aren't worth the risk.

Thanks I'll go and see what they say...Smile

Are you pg, and if so how far along are you?

Thumbwitch · 22/07/2012 16:14

Sorry, just realised this is in the pg topic so I assume you are pg - but still, how far along are you?

Just coming up to 20 weeks

Sorry, went to bed - then definitely you should have at least phoned your MW to let them know - I assume you did this :) Anything prior to 12w isn't an issue because the rhesus antigens don't develop on the foetus until that point; but any bleeding after 12w should be discussed with the MW and a possible shot of anti-D given.

I am rhesus negative and also had a few small bleeds after sex, each time i have had to have the antiD injection. You should definitely let your midwife or the labour ward know straight away, each time they were very keen for me to come in asap.

Yes do call midwife or delivery ward. They will probably want to give you anti D unless it's very clear that the bleeding isn't internal (ie is coming from cells on your cervix).

I called my mw team and they said nothing to worry about...!

She asked how much blood, if any more bleeding etc...and summarised that it was just a bit of friction.

I've felt quite a bit of movement today so hoping all is ok!

Bella - just to set your mind at rest, the chances of you having made any of your own anti-D in this time frame is minimal, and even if you had, you would have made an antibody called IgM which is too large to cross the placenta (it's the first antibody made whenever a new antigen is spotted by the immune system). If you had any subsequent bleeds, then you might instead produce IgG anti-D, which is much smaller and can cross the placenta - this is where the danger lies.

Obviously it's preferable to avoid making even the IgM anti-D, which is why the prophylactic anti-D is given to all Rh D Negative women during pregnancy - but even if you do, it won't affect your baby at the moment. :)
