Insect bites

I have a few really annoying insect bites. I know I can;t use piriton or anything like that but can I use Antisan cream?

Not anthisan, unfortunately, because it's an anti histamine cream and therefore like piriton not recommended for use in pregnancy.

You can, however, use Afterbite, which states it is safe to use when pregnant. It stings a bit (it's basically ammonia) but really, really helps. I find applying the afterbite followed by a small dab of sudocrem worked well. You have my sympathies, I'm prone to insect bites generally and in pregnancy it gets worse!!

Thank god it's not just me! I was eaten alive over a week ago and the bites are still really itchy and not healing. Desperately trying to find something I can use to heal them before Friday when I am a bridesmaid for my best friend. I am currently covered in plasters to stop myself scratching!!!

Can I get Afterbite from Boots/Superdrug?

Tiger balm, either the menthol or clove like one; will take the itch right away. Also works a treat if you have a headache (menthol one) or aches and pains (clove one). :)

Sainsburys sell it btw - about £1.50 a pot and will last ages.

maclairey - yes either boots or superdrug should sell afterbite Smile

See, I was told by a pharmacist that you shouldn't use Tiger Balm either. The advice seems to contradict itself all the time!

I've had insect bites and used Boots Antihistamine cream and was told by pharmacist that Benadryl (another form of antihistamine tablets) is ok to use in pregnancy...

Loislane78 · 23/07/2012 20:40

Wonder on what grounds they think you shouldn't use Tiger Balm? My pharmacist thinks fine (for headaches) but all the same as it's topical. Ah well, hope you find something!

Called my GP in the end and the secretary sorted out a script for Eurax which is working fine.

I am 20 wks. Used bendryl ointment despite the pack saying don't.

Last pregnancy I had terrible hives at 16 weeks. GP and midwives said I could do nothing but a friend of mine works with an expert in fetal medicine who said after first trimester loratidine was fine (clarityn). Was such a relief as otherwise I was going to have to amputate my own legs. He actually said he thought it was fine after 8 or 9 weeks once nervous system formed.

I got some bites last week and ended up at the gp's, and sent away for a perscription for antibiotics as some of the bites had a very bad reaction. The day before I had the pharmicist have a look as there were no gp appointments they said no antihistimines due to pg just savlon/germoline.

I did this thing where I said to the phrarmacist, I'm going to use it anyway, which is the least bad to use in pregnancy. She furtively pointed at one.
