Kegels

My pregnancy book tells me that I should be doing 20 rounds of 10 seconds of kegels three times a day. It says that it's only five minutes out of your day which makes it sound so easy and makes me feel so guilty for not doing them.

I probably do about 15 squeezes three times a week i.e. whenever I remember. How often do you do them?

I think I was a bit more diligent in my last pregnancy but definitely not doing five minutes a day. My pelvic floor was in pretty good shape after birth the last time so I think they probably are worthwhile but still can't be arsed to do them.

Thanks for reminding me. I'm being crap, but wondering if regular swimming and yoga helping.

My yoga teacher told me 100 a day broken up into 3 sets. However my physio told me that was way too many, I'd get muscle fatigue and to do no more than 10 at a time, up to 5 sets a day.

I am quite good at work as I have reminders in my outlook calendar 3 times a day & do sets of 10 or 15 when reminded. At the weekend I'm lucky to remember once a day.

Thanks for the reminder! I'm trying to do them, but only really remembering about 3 times a week...

My book says that you should squeeze and hold them for 10 secs, but I find that all I can manage is a single squeeze - I can't hold at all! Are my muscles just really useless, or am I doing something wrong?

  • should say, I do that single squeeze 10 - 15 times in a set. Not just one kegel Grin Just mean that I can't hold for 10 secs.

I think maybe just practise. If you are doing 1 second now, try 2 tomorrow then 3 and so on.
I started trying to remember to do them when I was on the tube or on a train, then it became associative, now I remember at other times too. But probably only do 5 sets of 10x10 seconds.
I have done yoga for a year and a half before this point and that's all about squeezing your pelvic floor so I think that helped me.
But they say it only takes a few weeks to get them much stronger - can't remember where I read that but I definitely did.
