What did your parents say?!

So what did your parents say when you told them you were expecting?!

DH and I have been married 1 yr, he is 34 and I am 28. Been together 6 years. Both luckily in stable jobs, and just moved into a bigger house in order for us to have a family.

So I?m 7 weeks now and we thought we?d tell both sets of parents last night. My mum calls for her weekly chat and talks on and on without letting me get a word in edgeways (as usual), goes a bit like this:

Me: well actually before you carry on I have some news
DM: oh what is it
Me: I?m pregnant
DM: HUH...WHAT did you SAAAY?
Me: I am pregnant
DM: OMG ? you?re pregnant? OMG, oh no... ? was it planned???!!!
Me: Hmm yes Mum of course
DM: well you don?t waste any time do you? what are you going to do about your job?
Me: err.. take maternity leave?!

Am I too early at 28, married, job and house...?!! MOTHERS!! just wait until she tried to enforce me to pick the names she likes!!

My dad said

"well don't ask me to babysit because I won't ever do it"
Hmm

ChocolateIsAFoodGroup · 20/07/2012 17:17

With first DC when I was 28 (like you, OP - married, job, house...) we'd already been trying for over a year and I literally peed on a stick days before AF was due (bonkers much?), so, um, a little bit early to start telling people Grin

But I had to tell my mum; we live in California, so I woke her up at around 2am; initially she sounded a bit groggy, but then totally delighted!

PIL were great about first two DC but we kinda dreaded telling them about number 3 cos they weren't keen on the idea Confused as still married to their son, house, happy SAHM, etc Grin They just think three DC is 'too much'. However, as soon as it was confirmed at 12 weeks (we waited till then to tell them) they were great and have been very supportive.

Rachel130690 · 20/07/2012 17:17

When I told my mum she said

'I told you not to do this again..'

My little sister found out 4 weeks before me and a week before I found out I sent her a jokey message about being pregnant!! Took about 5 mins to persuade her I wasn't joking.

My dad (I don't speak to him much) when I went to collect my sister from his house he said huh you've put on weight, I said yea that happens when your pregnant and walked out!

Rachel130690 · 20/07/2012 17:20

My Oh got very drunk the Monday after we found out and came home and said to his mum and dad, your gonna be a granny and Granda how do you feel about that? They spent the next half hour shouting at him for being drunk and not taking the news well. Said he should cope better and tell them when he sobered up. I was embarrassed

Is a funny memory now :)

5madthings · 20/07/2012 17:23

my mum told me to have an abortion and went on about it in quite some lenght, but i was 19 and at university.

with ds2 they still thought we were too young and with the other 3 well they were happy that we were happy but def hold the view that 2 children is quite enough so me having 5 was a bit of a shock for them, they do love them dearly tho :)

JarethTheGoblinKing · 20/07/2012 17:24

My Mum turned round to hide the very obvious shock on her face, and when she turned around started talking about miscarrying, and went into great detail about what happened when she miscarried.

Well done Mum, exactly what I wanted to hear at 12 weeks Hmm

suchnonsense · 20/07/2012 17:29

I was 31 when I got pregnant, married, been with DH for 8 years, home owners, both with good paying jobs etc, so could hardly have been a shock.....

Mum said "why?"
Dad: "is that wise?"

WTF?

Currently pregnant (10 weeks) with DC2, DS is 17 months old. My Mum has explained that she's too shocked to congratulate us, so it hasn't been mentioned since I told them at 6 weeks.

Sigh..... Good times...

ithastobeNAICEham · 20/07/2012 18:40

Pickles, I just sat there for about 5 mins, gobsmacked and then walked out. I refused to go back until she had stopped talking about abortion! Luckily, I didn't live with my mum and my dad wasn't happy but was a little better behaved about it!!

loveschocolate · 20/07/2012 18:49

We told my parents two days after our wedding as it was the first time we'd both been able to catch them alone. To say my Mum was over excited is an understatement...... Dad was also delighted but more concerned if I was feeling OK. They cracked open the champagne and then looked a bit foolish when I told them I didn't want a glass! At 9 wks was still feeling very sicky.... Trying not to vom when we told DH's parents the next day so it's a bit of a blur but think they were happy....

Pickles77 · 20/07/2012 18:53

How awful! That's what my ex was like but I can't imagine it from mum & dad. I feel for you Sad

Pootle78 · 20/07/2012 19:01

For dc2, we told mil when I was 15 weeks, 3 days after ds's first birthday

"well, I didn't think you two even liked each other anymore!"

Nuttyprofessor · 20/07/2012 19:31

And the prize for the most tactless person in the world goes to my DM.

Pregnant with My 4th following the still birth of my 3rd she said. "well don't expect me to buy it anything I wasted my money last time."

Pickles77 · 20/07/2012 19:44

Nutty- what did you say? What a cow!!!

patosullivan · 20/07/2012 19:49

Shock at Nuttyprofessors DM! I'd have been fuming if my mum said anything like that!

patosullivan · 20/07/2012 19:56

My mum said that she KNEW I was pregnant. And cited examples of unusual behaviour leading up to my announcement (delayed as long as possible after my sisters experience).

My sister told my mum when she was 8 weeks pregnant (and again, my mum said that she KNEW) - my mum had told the entire extended family and most of her friends within 2 days, much to my sister's dismay.

woopsidaisy · 20/07/2012 19:56

Nutty that is just unbelievable!

I told my mum when we were visiting, I was about 6/7 weeks. She told me not to tell my dad or anyone else until I was further along.
About a week later I started getting texts from relatives saying congratulations etc...my mum had announced it to extended family at a Christmas do in Aunts house! We weren't even there!
Didn't get to tell anyone else really,as everyone else found out...have a really big extended family!
Was annoyed as I was first cousin/grandchild to have a baby, but my siblings and I were adopted and my mum said that she had never got to make an "expecting" announcement....so I let her off.

BuntyCollocks · 20/07/2012 20:16

Both sets of parents were over the moon both times. It's my granny who has said inappropriate things as she was worried about me having to go through labour (she had a horrendous one with my uncle), and this time thinks I'm mad to be having 2 (just) under two. How will I ever cope - ill bloody well get on with it! ;)

TeaDr1nker · 20/07/2012 20:26

Me: mum, i'm pregnant, it's DP's (she didn't know we had got back together)
Mum: I thought you were back with him
Me: i'm keeping it
Mum: good

Dad - not such a good rxn, but he has since come round.

MIL - took months for her to come round (your not married, how can u shame us etc etc, this was all to DP behind my back). She is now the best MIL i could wish for and dotes on my DC
FIL - pleased for his son who he never thought would settle down

Signet2012 · 21/07/2012 11:52

My dad cried! He is getting all soft in his old age!

littlemissbroody26 · 21/07/2012 13:04

my mum cried, we were just about to start IVF (I only tested because i was about to drink wine to bring on my period) she was really happy I didn't have the IVF drugs.

My dad said "are you sure??" I didn't really know what to say i just said "well the tests all say i'm pregnant"

cashmere · 21/07/2012 15:57

My Dad said 'well done'!!! Didn't we do well!

SoHHKB · 21/07/2012 19:29

Haha - my mum asked who the father was! Blush To be fair I'd only just got my head around thinking of him as my boyfriend (I was a totally responsible 32 year old with a copper coil...)
