hello
I'm 21wks pg. was diagnsoed on friday with flu & also a chest infection. given paracetemol for the flu and antibiotics -amoxcillin - for the chest infection. the dr also wanted to test me for slapped cheek disease as they were so red. I KNOW that she wouldn't have told me to take paracetemol if it wsn't necessary & nor would she have prescriebed antibiotics if they weren't safe. I've never taken so many in my life - I'm rarely ill. I'm just really nervous all these drugs will harm the baby. also very worried about the implications of slapped chekk. I taught for 15 years but have no recollection of having caught it then. wouldbe gratefulif there's anyone there who can stop me worrying myself into an early grave

I have read that slapped cheek is quite common in pregnancy.
I understand how you feel about taking the tablets but they will be fine.

You need to get rid of the chest infection as if it's left untreated, it can be a real nightmare.

When I was pg with DD2 I had at least 5 lots of antibiotics in a row for a really really nasty chest infection that I just couldn't shift. I took paracetamol too, soluble is good if you have a sore throat from coughing.
Slapped cheek I can't advise on, sorry. Hope you start to feel better soon!

AggiePanther · 05/03/2006 10:46

I know there's no problem with paracetamol ...and I'm sure gp wouldnt prescribe Ab's if they weren't safe ...don't know anything about slapped cheek disease tho' sorry.
BTW feel free to come and join us on the due in july thread \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=2290&threadid=150053&stamp=060304191634\here} for lots of support from others at the same stage of pg as you :)

I had a chest infection in my first pregnancy that was treated with Amoxicillin tablets. I also took steroid inhalors right thru both pregnancies.

Both babies are fine.

If u r prescribed medicines in pregnancy the tend to only do it if they need to (at least thats how it works here)

If u didn't have the anti b's u could get lots worse

Slapped cheek, otherwise known as \link{http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_viral/fifth.html\Fifth Disease}, is a human form of parvovirus. It can cause complications for the foetus but these are rare and if you have been in schools for all that time chances are you would have been previously exposed and therefore be immune. Hope all goes well.

I think Slapped Cheek is only dodgy in the first 12 weeks anyway - will check

tortoiseshell · 05/03/2006 18:26

...NHS website says can be a problem in first 20 weeks, so you should be fine.

I had antibiotics in both my pregnancies - with ds before I knew I was pregnant, and with dd, 3 courses for suspected urine infections (which turned out to be nothing......)

Definately better to take the paracetemol/antib's than to be really ill. I had flu with ds. It started when I was 11 weeks and carried on until past 16 weeks as I refused to take anything. I ended up with a high temperature, persistant cough, chest infection etc, and antib's anyway!

Both babies fine btw! Smile

bodenbetty, I'm 32 weeks and on my 11th course of antibiotics this pregnancy!! Amoxycillin are very safe in pregnancy and have been used for over 30 years with no reported ill effects to mother or child. The doctors really wouldn't prescribe you something unless it was necessary and they would have to tell you if there was any evidence it was not safe. I've had amoxyll 5 times this pregnancy (and lots of other ones when the chest infection developed to pneumonia) but I also had amoxyll when pregnant with dd 3 years ago and she's perfect. Paracetamol is totally safe throughout pregnancy and it is more damaging to have a fever than to take paracetamol to bring it down.

Slapped cheek, it is highly possible that your cheek is red because you have flu and a fever, so don't worry about the results yet. They keep wanting to check me but I know that I get a very pink cheek every time I get ill (that's how my mum used to check whether I was lying when I said I was too ill for school).

thankyou all so much. the flu has gone now & i just feel knackered so its a day will the TV for me. I keep thinking that surely 15yrs in schools would have given me some immunity along the line!! trouble is neurotic is my middle name & if there is something to panic about or be negative about then thats what I'll do.
