Just wondered if anyone had any practical ideas on keeping sickness at bay?
Am only 6 weeks and after just taking a bite of my roll I proceeded to heave and throw up all in the kitch bin in the middle of the office - no a good look!! A one off I can hide but worried people wont believe me if it happens again esp as office is full of women!!

Try to keep your blood sugar levels level iyswim, it's the sudden drops that make that whoomfing feeling, hence after X hours of sleep.
Drink high juice squash (no artificial sweetners) so you stay hydrated and anything that does stay down has calories.
Drink a pint of water first thing, throw it up if necessary. Then drink a pint of said squash and fingers crossed some will stay down and allow you to eat something.
Keep carby snacks on you at all times. Look up the GI Diet for foods that release energy slowly eg oats, hoummous. Sweets will cause sugar crashes so unless you are eating them constantly they are no use (plus you start to feel like your teeth will fall out after a while.)
If you wake in the night to do a wee, have an oatcake.

i had terrible all day sickness, things that helped me were, eat small and often, avoid strong tastes keep it bland, green tea with a small bit of fresh ginger put in it. and avoid garlic like the plague, the smell made me sick even a small whiff. hope this helps. also if you go to the docs they can give you anti sickness tablets didnt do anything for me but other people think they work,

SkipTheLightFanjango · 21/07/2012 23:37

Ginger biscuits are your friend!

Keep sugar levels steady, and keep hydrated (much easier said than done0

On my 3rd pregnancy I finally realised not eating any sugar was the most helpfull thing.....lots of regular, slow release carbs are the way to go, along with lots of sips of water.

Flisspaps · 21/07/2012 23:46

Mars bars where what my MW recommended I have dotted about, so if I felt sick I could raise my blood sugar quickly, and then get something more long-lasting afterwards.

They were fabulous, and that's almost a prescription for chocolate!

LynetteScavo · 21/07/2012 23:56

No, no, no, no, no!

I did the chocolate thing with DC one. At my way through every cadbury's bar on the market. Very good quick fix, but you will then have a dip and feel dreadful.

Cut out the sugar. 'Tis the only way! If anyone ever told me I wouldn't eat refined sugar for 3 moths I wouldn't have believed them, but it is possible, and it does help.

Jacob's crackers are good - or the cheaper supermarket own brand ones...

cupcake78 · 22/07/2012 11:56

Cut a green apple into 8ths, squeeze lemon over it and eat a piece every 15/20 mins.

I had a terrible time and grazed all the way through, anything outside 11am and 2pm would make me violently sick.

Eat what you want when you want don't worry about health etc that'll come with time. Don't get too tired or stressed either, that makes it worse.

voscar · 22/07/2012 19:56

Sipping ice cold water or juice with lots of I've cubes in it

Ice lolly's or I've poles worked.

Jelly babies for a little while, or wine gums - just something to suck on slowly.

Crackers, dry toast - anything carb based but not too rich

Ultimately I ended up on cyclezine.

NellyBluth · 22/07/2012 21:07

Yes yes yes to dry crackers and jelly babies, they keep your sugar levels up and having something in your stomach helps loads.

Don't worry about what you are eating, though - if you can only eat chips and gravy for a week, then just eat chips and gravy. Keep taking your pregnancy tablets, but baby will be fine anyway.

Drink 'energy' drinks like Lucozade if you can, as they will keep giving you nutrients.

If you are having a day where you can barely keep anything down, even crackers or toast, focus on Lucozade and something like Cupasoup. A doctor told me to do this on really terrible days and it did help, I was actually less sick. I found soups generally pretty good when I was feeling awful.

But above all, keep rested, and keep an eye on how much you are throwing up. There are good anti-nausea drugs available if you are happy to take medication. I was on Stemetil (cyclizine didn't agree with me) from week 8 until the day I gave birth, and it helped keep it in check. If you don't think you are keeping fluids down for a few days, or you start to lose weight, please see your GP. They are much better now about morning sickness/hyperemesis than they used to be.

Hope you start to feel better x

I'm 8 weeks and have been really struggling with sickness at work (thankfully i'm now on Summer hols which is massively helping!)

The only thing i've found that really helps is eating little and often. I make sure I eat some cereal as soon as I wake up and then follow it up with some Brioche a little while later, Brioche and Breakfast biscuits have been my savior at work as you can just pick at them when needed.
Eat before you start feeling too sick so that you can keep your appetite up. I sometimes find it difficult to eat as I just don't really fancy any food as the sickness is always there.
Still avoiding anything sweet, if I have any chocolate it makes me feel so much worse!
Been trying ginger (biscuits and tea) but to be honest I can't say it made much of a positive effect.
I think you just have to listen to your body really. We usually plan our evening family meals for the week but we're planning them on the day now as I seem to only fancy one particular thing and can't stomach anything else (also seems to change every day and sometimes is food I would never normally eat!)
Really hoping my symptoms get better after 12 weeks though!

Excitedbutscared84 · 24/07/2012 10:29

Thanks for all the advice yesterday I only managed half a small bottle of lucozade and 2 ginger nut biscuits but wasnt sick, today I have been sipping weak orange squash with ice.

Dinners are worst as I just dont fancy anything right now and poor hubby gets all excited about cooking me a healthy balanced tea (he is a house husband) when all I wanted the other day was chips and curry sauce - the thought of his perfectly roast chicken turned my stomach.

Going to stock up on crackers I think and and some dry biscuits to go in my desk so I can 'graze' all day! Jelly babies seem good as well and will cheer me up as feeling rather sorry for my self, lol!

Glad you weren't sick yesterday. However, if you only keep up this level of eating and especially drinking it's probably worth talking to the GP, as in this heat you might get dehydrated (I was in exactly the same place as you this time last year, in the heat!). I don't mean to sound like a rep for a drugs company, but there are tablets that can help you feel a bit more human x

Excitedbutscared84 · 24/07/2012 13:25

No you carry on all advice gratefully received, anything that helps right now :)
Have got a doctors appointment now for morning as dehydration would explain the serious fuzzy headache I have had for 2 days!
Have bought jelly babies, water and lucozade and even a pack of wotsits just incase I fancy them in a bit, the thought of them right now is a bit to much so going to drink lucozade as I am funny with my sugar levels if I dont get enough I tend to actually shake and feel all light headed and thats even when I am not pregnant!
