Daft question alert: can someone tell me lovely things about baby boys?

Hello, had my 20 week scan yesterday and have found out I am having a baby boy. Was really delighted to see that everything looks ok at the scan, and the little boy is growing nicely as he should be - was awesome seeing his heart beating and a really clear picture of his face in profile. I think he looks like his dad!

Anyway, although I am really pleased to know the gender (and wouldn't have minded either way, as long as he/she was healthy), I don't know anyone with a baby boy and don't know what to expect! We have 4 young nieces and all my friends seem to have had baby girls too, so I can't really picture what a little boy will be like, as a baby, and then a toddler, and then a young boy! I guess cos I am so familiar with little girls that was what I was probably picturing in my head all along.

Sounds daft, but was wondering if baby boys like the same songs and activities as little girls?? And are there differences between boys and girls apart from the obvious bits between their legs!!, is it true they tend to develop physical communication quicker than verbal communication?

Apologies if this all sounds a bit od - I am not typically the sort of person to ascribe certain characteristics to one gender or the other (and would be equally happy taking him to ballet practice as to football), but would love to hear some lovely stories of what it's like having a little boy :)

Oh yes the dressing... mine have all been different, some fussy some not, but all pretty fussy by the time they hit 13. DS2 had a best friend who was a girl and loved dressing up in her tutus. My 4yo DS4 is obsessed with superheroes so mostly will only wear themed t shirts now.

BUT all the big three went through the only wanting to wear nylon footie shirts and trackies stage (around 8 through to 10 or 11) which I had a problem with as it looked so horrible - on the up side it was v easy to wash and wear!

yes fax the football kit looks awful but it does wash and they dry very quickly which is a bonus as with 4 boys there is LOTS of laundry!

re the weeing, babies do wee when you take of their nappy, parituclarly boys i just kept a muslin cloth of flannel to hand and covered their will up incase and yes you need to make sure it is pointing DOWN in the nappy or else the nappy wont be much use when they do wee, it will all just go up the front and out!.

another tip iwth potty training (some say boys are later at this, one of mine was done at 18mths tho! the others all 2-3 so average) try and do it in the summer, its much easier, let them be naked in the garden, they love to wee in bushes/trees it makes it fun for them. weeing standing up they will probalby need a little step and you can try putting something for them to 'aim' at int he toilet bowl some people use a ping pong ball or you can buy special stickers or little blue balls to go in the toilet for this purpose... inever have done but others do and given the drips i inevitably clean up it may be an idea!

Two boys here, both very different but best mates (80% of the time). Things they both loved:
Music groups
Play kitchens/dolls and pushchair
Playdough
Crafty stuff

Ds1 walked early and is very sporty, ds2 far more sedentary and into imaginative play.
They are fabulous, as are my neices, congratulations!

My ds is the sweetest, most gorgeous little person ever. Fact ;)

He is 18 months, a total mummy's boy, very physically affectionate - loves giving mummy, daddy and bump a kiss and cuddle. He was very early walking (first steps 9 months), first words at about 13 months, and has been very quick with rudimentary sentences "do you want this ds?" "mama ... Go!"

Little boys are fantastic. Looking forward to our pink bundle joining us and seeing how wonderful he will be with her :)

Boys are lovely, very easy going and loads of fun! Nothing seems to phase our 15 year old! He is an absolute diamond and 30 weeks preg with second :) good luck u gets lots of affection from little boys

I have one ds and having a group of friends with both hours and girls of the same age I can honestly say that they are pretty much the same and enjoy the same programmes, boys love peppa pig as much as girls love thomas the tank engine, same toys, songs, books etc. If fact when the girls come to my house they can't get enough of the cars and trains and when my ds goes to theirs he lives playing with the dolls and prams. I think it is just that we trend to expose them to stereotypical toys rather than that they actually prefer them.

My ds is nearly 2.5 and has been able to verbally communicate really well since about 2 which again is the same as the girls in his group. Definitely an affectionate, kind and caring little boy and he even told me the other day that he liked mummys new dress and that I looked pretty! My heart melted!

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed when I found out I was having a boy air had really wanted a girl. That just seems ridiculous to me now as your baby is your baby regardless of sex and they will have their own amazing little personality.

I am now pg with dc # 2 and I honestly don't mind whether it's a boy our girl

I have a 2.9yo DS and 5 week old DD. so far, the main differences are that she sleeps more than he does, and has yet to pee in her open mouth like he used to!

DS is hard hard work, doesn't sleep, never has, total daddy's boy, rarely stops moving and talking (was standing at 5 months and cruising the furniture - walking at 9 months). however, he is hilarious, loves singing, dancing, plays with the iron and kitchen playset at playgroup, loves crafty stuff, and isn't particularly messy with it. also mad about diggers and 'nee naws', loves Peppa Pig and Thomas the tedious Tank Engine.

I was slightly sad to find DC2 was not another boy, but look forward to seeing the differences between the two of them as she grows!

Am I the only person whose DS ISN'T cuddly and affectionate? Mine is a complete mental case. From day one he has absolutely not done cuddles, he'll squirm and try to escape if you even try. He's crazy, with an array of strange noises and facial expressions. But he's completely hilarious, and beautiful, and makes me laugh every day with his antics. I also love how independent and stubborn he is. Everyone says how you can just see the mischief in his eyes, it literally shines out of him.

But I think that has more to do with personality than gender. I love having a boy, it's the best thing ever. You'll love it.

Tessa617 · 20/07/2012 21:44

I have one of each: DD is 4.9, DS is 1.10. Both were surprises so when he arrived I was a bit clueless and (I will admit) slow to warm up to him. But boys are GREAT! DS is very cuddly and affectionate and he LOVES his Mummy - so much that I have to put him in his high chair, brush his hair or he gets upset with DH trying. Mine have been VERY different in their personalities and development: DS only started showing an interest in books around 1.5 - DD was interested from really small. DS walked faster, is more physical but is not talking much even now. I love my DD and we have some lovely Mummy-daughter times; but I also feel very blessed to have my little boy - its so interesting to see what he does. I've BEEN a DD, I kind of know what she's thinking about so DS is quite mysterious and exciting in comparison.

Doilooklikeatourist · 20/07/2012 21:54

I have one of each . DS is now 17 , and DD is 14 .
Baby boys are lovely .
You must get him a navy blue and white sailor suit type babygro .
Dungarees and a lumberjack shirt
DS first word was tractor
Boys are fun and much nicer than their teen sisters
But you must start saving . Because apparently I should have known that he'd want a car and insurance when he passed his driving test . Silly me .
