Blood test for gestational diabetes - how long to get results? Diet in the meantime?

Hi

I've got to go for a blood test tmw to check glucose levels etc as had sugar in my urine when tested yesterday and GP was worried about gestational diabetes. I'm just wondering if anyone knows how long it takes to get the results for these kind of things and also, is there anything i could/should be doing diet wise in the meantime just in case i do have GD?

Also what impact will it have on my pregnancy (other than having a big baby!). I'm 33 weeks and already considered high risk due to previous CS so under consultant, and currently have placenta previa with scan next week to see if its shifted so not sure what else might need to happen if i do have GD?

Bit clueless on this and know i could google it, but don't really want to be scared witless!

Thanks!

First of all dont panic!

The test results come back quickly, withing a couple of days at the most.

If you are positive then you will need to cut out all sugars including the hidden ones. The main thing aside form sugar avoidance is watching your carbs. You still need carbs, but dont have too many in one go, and when you do make sure to combine them with protein.

check out some low GI foods online to see whats the best as these foods burn off slowly so dont give you a blood sugar spike. Apples for a snack are my little sweet friends!

Your midwife will guide you through diet but essentially its not too hard.

Mornings are the time when your body responds worst to carbs, so dont have cereal and toast and juice, instead have one piece of wholemeal toast with a piece of bacon, an egg and some tomaotes and mushrooms (best part of my GD diet!!! :) ) I find lunch to still be quite hard to not take on too many carbs, but I can manage 1 slice of bread, or some wholemeal pasta or brown rice as long as I have it with protein. Dinner is much easier! And snack through the day, you need to eat small meals and graze between them.

But we are all different and respond to different things in different ways, so wait and see if you are positive first, and then just start to experiment with what works for you, you will soon get the hang of it :)

Oh and the testing is dead easy and doesnt hurt :)

I really wouldn't change your diet before tomorrow. You need to just eat what you've been eating.

I'm assuming you have to fast from tonight (with just small sips of water)?

Don't worry too much, as Tinker said, it's easy & doesn't hurt (unelss you're a needle phobe).

I had glucose in urine, over 40, had polyhydrmanios & large for dates DD1 (at 40), and my brother, sister & dad all have type ll diabetes, but I never got GD x
