Am 33 weeks pregnant - is this too early to buy nursing bras? Also, any recommendations which bras wear/wash well, I seem to remember the ones I purchased last time around became 'grubby' very quickly.

The later you leave it, the more likely it is that it will fit well once your milk comes in. The NCT recommend 36 weeks or later.

I had a lacy type one from M&S. It was v comfortable, and dried in no time. It was alos very supportive.

Dont get one from Mothercare if, like me, your Norks are like watermelons, as they are kack

I went to John Lewis and they fitted me/recommended increase in cup size likely etc. I think I was about 36 weeks by then.

coppertop · 04/03/2006 18:55

I got mine at 36wks from M&S. I found them really good when I used them for ds2 and so have bought similar ones again this time.

notasheep · 04/03/2006 18:58

I bought mine through NCT catalogue, looked good, washed well, very comfortable and didnt take long to dry

i bought underwired ones from blooming marvellous. they were truly fabulous and i highly recommend them. saves you from wide-boob-syndrome!

CaptainCavemansMummy · 04/03/2006 21:45

When I went to John Lewis they suggested not to get fitted before 37 weeks. Have to say, the bras fitted perfectly!

chicagomum · 04/03/2006 21:46

I would buy them after 36 weeks and then only buy 2 at the most. The ones I bought where totally useless 3 days after ds was born and my milk came in and of course couldn't be returned as I had worn them. So had to fork out for a whole load more.

TuttiFrutti · 05/03/2006 09:39

I bought Royce (very good) and NCT (also very good) and Mothercare (I agree with intergalactic, were terrible). I was told by House of Fraser to wait for 37 weeks before buying, although I bought before this as was convinced I would go into labour early.

I needed 6, as my breasts were constantly leaking milk and I had to change bras several times a day. That was using breast pads as well! Some women are like this and some aren't - you won't know till the time comes.

another vote for underwired at blooming marvellous

this was after 8 months of poorly fitting m and s
and absoutely shite boobs round your knees and cheesewire under your arms dome shaped monstrosities from mothercare

pootlepod · 13/03/2006 19:05

I would only buy 1 or 2 before the birth and then wait for your milk to come in. I ended up buying a whole load more as I went up another 2 cup sizes. In some areas you can get a NCT bra rep to come to your house.

I brought three just after my daughter was born, from Mothercare.
Was measured last week (dd now 5 months old) so that I could get a new one in the correct size now that feeding has been established, good job too as I'm three sizes bigger than I thought I was!!
I've got three Mothercare & one from John Lewis and must say that the JL one is miles better. Much more supportive and feels a lot nicer (though that could be because it fits!!)
I'd get one or two cheapish ones for the first few weeks (Boots & Mothercare prices are pretty good), then pop to John Lewis when feeding is established and buy a few nice ones.

noodlekitkat · 16/03/2006 16:33

I was just going to ask about bras also! I think I may visit Blooming M on Sunday as I am getting builder's bum now also Blush

RedZuleika · 16/03/2006 21:58

I would leave it as late as possible and then only buy one or two to start with. I was sized by some (usually very good) ladies in the lingerie shop near me as a 36FF at 40 weeks. After the birth (at 42+ weeks) and my milk came in, the band was too big and the cup too small. I'm now in Royce 34H.

noodlekitkat · 16/03/2006 22:28

RedZuleika: Girl - you've got some figure going!

I think I will buy a cheap bra then as my current one is tight. It may be too small in a few months so will not invest heavily here...

RedZuleika · 17/03/2006 11:09

It's a mixed blessing! The only nursing bras I can buy are like old ladies' scaffolding bras (think Triumph Doreen) and tops are a bloody nightmare (because obviously I can't get into any of my old ones).

I'm hoping they'll subside a bit when I stop breastfeeding (whenever that is), but by that time they'll probably be round my knees.

For the first time, I could consider a cosmetic reduction...

ruthlouise · 17/03/2006 11:31

I bought mothercare ones last time and they were fine but maybe because I'm quite small on top. I bought 34b nursing bras around 5-6 months pregnant as I'd grown out of my usual bras. The shop assistant tried to sell me 'support bras' saying the nursing ones wouldn't give enough support during pregnancy (and thats before the milk comes in!). I couldn't see much difference between the two types and it was great as I bought the 'c' cup ones at about 8 months. When my milk settled after a couple of months the 'c's were too big so I was pleased to be able to use the 'b' cup ones again - If I'd bought the support ones they would have been totally useless as those ones don't have drop cups.
hth's

blueshoes · 17/03/2006 11:42

ruthlouise, agree that maternity support bras are a waste of money and a big con. I am small on top and Mothercare nursing bras worked for me. But 17 months of nursing made them pretty skanky Grin. Wonder if there are any drop cup versions that have a smooth texture (like a t-shirt bra).
