Terrible nausea - should I take metoclopramide?

I know there are already several live sickness threads at the moment and don't want to bombard you all but I would really appreciate any advice on why people worry about taking metoclopramide for sickness? I have been really suffering since week 6 (now week 10) and my doctor prescribed me some yesterday. I keep reading on here about people whose doctors say only take it if absolutely necessary. Can anyone explain why doctors are so hesitant to give out anti sickness drugs and what the risks actually are?

I am terrified of taking them because of the risks but I actually don't know what the risks are - just that doctors seem scared of women taking them! I hope that makes sense! I am also on lots of other medication for kidney and blood disease including immunosuppressants, antibiotics, aspirin and heparin injections daily so am so wary of taking even more!

I am so worried but so incredibly sick at the same time!

Any advice would be massively appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd guess that the thalidomide problem is still at the back of many Dr's minds though metoclopramide has been used extensively in pregnant women.

Somewhat ironic that post-op nausea and vomiting is well researched and treated (medline search will pull up hundreds of papers) due to the distress and anxiety it causes patients yet pregnant women are just left to suffer and get told to put up with it!

There are no associated risks in pregnancy with taking metroclopramide- only some side effects that can happen to anyone and that are fairly harmless. Dr's are hesitant to give them out because they are taught to avoid giving any medication to pregnant ladies, but this is an outdated view. As long as you make sure that it doesn't interact with any of your other current medications it is perfectly safe to take as regularly as three times a day.
