What is the horrible horrible pain?

I don't know how to describe this, mainly cos I'm rubbish at knowing the right names for body parts.

But if you look at this picture of a naked babrbie Hmm here, the pain is all around that _/ shape of the groin and also sort of where the legs join the body.

These last three days I've found it so hard to walk, get up/down, move my legs if I'm on back or turn over. Will anything make is stop??

How many weeks pregnant are you? If the groin pain is like a stitch it could be round ligament pain which tends to go by itself. Could also be symphysis pubis disfunction but I've not had that myself so can't describe it.

MrsSnaplegs · 18/07/2012 19:00

It could be SPD - how far along are you?
I used to get a real ache in my "undercarriage" near my due dates - what type of pain is it?

I'm 31 weeks, luckily the pain isn't in the under carriage so much, more the sidey bits. I will have a little google now. Do I need to prepare to be diagnosed with death or is it more like, "yeh that's a pain you get when you're pregnant"?

PS> forgot my manner is my dash to google; thanks everyone!

Sounds a bit like SPD, do you have a "grinding" sensation as well?

ilovesprouts · 18/07/2012 19:32

spd

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 18/07/2012 19:38

MrsReiver, no, no grinding, just an unbearable pain, like an almighty acheyness? Does that mean it's not SPD. If I go on all fours it goes!

OP posts:
MrsReiver · 18/07/2012 19:50

No the grinding isn't always there - the fact it feels better when you're on all fours definitely sounds SPD-y. My mate who is due tomorrow (!) has SPD and she spends a lot of time on all fours.

(insert smutty joke about being on all fours getting here into this situation in the first place here)

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 18/07/2012 20:24

the thing about being on all fours though is that it does eventually hurt your arms and knees Sad

I would quite like a mission impossible style cushioned harness, to just dangle. Swimming would probably help, but I think I would be sick in the water and then I would die of embarrassment. Blush

It sounds like SPD. I have this exact same thing. The doc got me to lay down and see how far i could spread my knees and that was how she diagnosed it.
Go see your midwife or doc :)

She then told me to keep me knees together as much as possible. Bit-late-for-the-lecture-now

Sounds like spd! Get a support belt, it will keep the weight of the baby off your poor pelvis!

mrslurkalot · 19/07/2012 10:35

Sounds like SPD. Sorry you have this, I remember how painful it is - I felt like I had been kicked in the bits by a horse! Get a support belt, and get referred to a physio to give you some exercises and coping strategies (how to turn over in bed, get out of the car etc without spreading your legs too far). On the upside, it's caused by pregnancy hormones that loosen up your pelvis for birth and mine went immediately that DS was born. I had a section but you may need advice on labour positions. Good Luck and congratulations on your pregnancy x

Hermionewastherealhero · 19/07/2012 10:37

I have this, my midwife has referred me to the hospital. Getting out of bed and getting into the car hurt a lot, also if I slip and my left leg goes to the side - agony!

MoonHare · 19/07/2012 20:12

Definitely sounds like SPD which is very common in pregnancy but is not normal and don't be fobbed off by anyone in the medical profession suggesting you should just wear a support belt and put up with it. If you're lucky you live somewhere where the physiotherapy team will actually treat you rather than just send you away with a belt and an excercise sheet and a cheery "see you again if you need crutches", which is what happens round here.

SPD is treatable and having suffered it twice before I discovered this by seeing a private chiropractor this time around. She has done wonders for me, unfortunately it costs £35 a session and the NHS will not pay. If you can afford it I recommend finding a chiropractor who knows about SPD and can treat you. They can't cure it but can make you much more stable and comfortable. There are lots of others on MN who recommend osteopaths for SPD too.

Even if you don't go before baby comes, try to see a chiropractor afterwards, mine has told me that she could have prevented me getting it again this time if I'd seen her after DC2 was born.

Best wishes

Does it feel a bit like a burning pain? If so I get the same, am 33 weeks. It's not pleasant!

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 19/07/2012 21:21

I do go and see a chiropractor fairly regularly as I have a squiffy pelvis anyway! I had quite a lot of loosening in the first few weeks which went away so I haven't seen her for 10 weeks or so. I just wondered if this level of pain was normal before I see her. Booked in for tomorrow though!

Whatevertheweather, it's like a really deep burning, gnawing, aggregating pain. Getting up from being sat on the floor is the biggest killer then turning over in bed!

Yep same here I have to do a complicated sideways shuffle, half rock, flipping motion taking up 3/4 of the bed just to turn from one side to another! Pillow between my knees seems to help a bit with the burning sensation. It's all glamour Smile

fusspot66 · 19/07/2012 21:28

Slippery pajamas in silk or nylon are very helpful when you turn over in bed. Spd also called pelvic girdle pain now. It's horrid by any name .
