12wk scan is at half 2 today and I have the usual nerves like will everything be ok etc but are there statistics showing how common twins are? There's twins in my DP family but none that I know of in my family. I've been really rough with morning sickness this time round which I've found out can be lead to multiple babies and everywhere I go there's twins, and to top it off my DP had to take this afternoon off work to come with me and someone asked him what the odds on us having twins are!? Think I'm being a bit paranoid, please reassure me, really don't think I could cope with twins!!

I have absolutely no statistical evidence to back it up, but I believe that twins in the father's family can be a bit of a sign Shock - and certainly I know a few women in your situation who've had twins.

Try not to worry though, it's still more likely to be just the one in there. And even if it is two - well, you'll manage, you're a woman Wink

darkfever · 18/07/2012 11:07

As I understand it, you're more likely to have non-identical twins if there's a family history of them on the mothers side, because the mother has to produce two eggs instead of one, and the father can't influence that IYSWIM.

Chances of identical twins are the same whether you have twins in your family or not.

So you shouldn't have any increased chance of having twins. And even if you did, you'd still be more likely to have one baby in there than two.

PickleSarnie · 18/07/2012 11:11

Identical twins are just "one of those things", I don't believe that there is any genetic predisposition towards them. Non-identical twins can run on the mothers side but not, as far as I'm aware, the fathers side. After all, they are created by the mother releasing two eggs instead of one. Men always produce millions of sperm.

I think age is another factor. The older you are, apparently the more likely you are to start chucking out 2 eggs instead of 1. I'm an old gimmer of 36 so was terrified about twins appearing on the scan because thoughts of a triple buggy (I have a 21month DS) filled me with dread!

PickleSarnie · 18/07/2012 11:12

cross posted with darkfever there!!

GnocchiNineDoors · 18/07/2012 11:13

Eeek how exciting!! No twins in our families and I still thought 'what if' and we had a singly.

Do let us know how you get on.

Nancy54 · 18/07/2012 11:14

Hey, darkfever is right - you are more likely to have non identical twins if there is history on the mother's side. The father's side has absolutaly nothing to do with it - men always release millions of sperm but there's usually only one egg to fertilise!!

I'm pregnant with twins and there is no history one my partner's side and not sure about mine - my mum thinks her grandfather may have been a twin, but apart from that, nothing!!!

But i had NO morning sickness whatsoever and actually very few pregnancy symptons!

So i suppose you'll see today!! but if it is twins, that's great news too!! after the initial shock and thinking 'how the f**k will we cope", i was over the moon!

good luck!

poorbuthappy · 18/07/2012 11:15

Yep to all above.
It does make me laugh (in a nice way of course!) when people say twins run in DPs family so we are more likely to have twins...ummmm how exactly?

Melindaaa · 18/07/2012 11:15

Someone asked you what your odds are? Well, that definitely means it must be twins. And you see twins everywhere? Yup, seals the deal. In fact, I suspect you don't have twins, but a whole litter in there.

gardenpixies32 · 18/07/2012 11:29

Your chance of having fraternal twins is about 1:80 and non identical twins is 1:350.

After the initial shock you will soon warm to the idea of 2 babies. Babies are like shoes to me, they should come in pairs.

I meant identical twins is 1:350.

GaryTankCommander · 18/07/2012 11:35

My dad is a twin (and therefore also my aunt)... My maternal aunts are twins... My paternal great grandfather was a twin.
Neither me or my brother have had twins.

You don't know?! Maybe 1, maybe 2, maybe 3 or 4? But statistically you are very likely to be carrying 1 baby! Good luck at your scan!

TwelveLeggedWalk · 18/07/2012 11:38

I am the least woo, most cynical, non ghost/psychic/similar bolllocks believing person I know, but I had a very odd premonition of telling my best friend that at my 12 week scan there was twins. And there was.

So if you feel like there might be....

Kirsty240287 · 18/07/2012 12:40

Melindaaa this was meant to be a light hearted discussion to pass the time and ease the nerves before the scan as no one except my DP knows when my scan is but thank you for your input Grin

harrygracejessica · 19/07/2012 09:20

Having had a singleton then twins the first question I asked the next time was 'please tell me it's just 1 this time' nope there were 2 again :-)

Kirsty240287 · 19/07/2012 13:53

OMG harry what are the chances of that! lol How on earth do you cope!?

hettiebull · 19/07/2012 14:21

Twins on the father's side are irrelevant - it's the hyper ov gene that runs through the maternal line. It gets more likely as you get older. I conceived twins but there were none until we looked back to my great-grandmother and beyond when suddenly loads of sets popped up.
