Hi,

I'm 29 weeks and measuring big so have been sent for a GD test on Monday. It all sounds a bit daunting, I can't eat, they take some blood, I drink something and then sit there for 2 n half hours then they take more blood. Does anyone have any experiences to share of the test? I'm worried about not being able to eat anything all morning as think it will make me go a bit funny.

Hope you can help!

Thanks!!

I refused it tbh. It caused a bit of a do dah but I offered to prick my fingers instead and submit the results after a week.

I had it with my last two pregnancies; with DD1 I ended up having the test 3 times, as they were convinced I had GD due to her size, and the fact I had polyhydramnios (I didn't have GD).

It's fine. Not being able to eat or drink anything, except plain water, can be a pain, especially if you feel a bit faint, but the test is (usually) first thing, so you can eat straight after.

You will be given a sweet drink (what we get given here is like very sweet lemon squash), and have to drink it within a certain amount of time. You will (here anyway) probably be told to sit still in the waiting room, for the two hours, this is because walking around will affect the results.

It's best to take some food to eat immediately after the test has concluded. As not eating, having something sweet, then not eating again, can make you feel ill, and here they like you to bring food to eat straight after.

If you feel ill during the test, tell them.

It's really not worth mucking around with something as potentially serious as GD. Don't put it off.

I had one last week...very similar to what Tamisara has described above with a few small differences but I would imagine each maternity unit is different.

The drink wasn't the most pleasant I've ever had...hot sugary water...but not that bad, we had nice reclining seats in the waiting room and then tea and toast (which they insisted upon as I was driving home) once they'd taken our blood 2 hours later.

I will admit to feeling quite nauseous during the 2 hour wait but on the whole I've experienced much worse.

It's fine honestly. The drink isn't the nicest... Mine was lemony and I HATE the taste of lemon. It was very boring waiting around, so take a good book!

Agree with what's been said. It was fine I was early for mine & the nurses let me in first. We had orangey lucozade stuff for our sugary drink. Was v glad I had brought a book but did end up having a lovely chat with the 2 other ladies who were testing at the same time! Never been so glad to have a bag of dried apricots in my lifeGrin!

Signet2012 · 16/07/2012 21:11

I've had two done. Test was first thing. Nothing to eat or drink from 10pm night before. Got there they took my blood. Have to drink a bottle of lucosade in ten minutes then two hours later get your blood done again. I felt fine

Signet2012 · 16/07/2012 21:12

I actually left and went round my parents in the two hour gap after promising I wouldn't eat Grin

gardenpixies32 · 16/07/2012 21:16

Had my done this morning. 9am first blood taken followed by sweet squash like drink, sat around for 2 hours then second bloods taken. Will get results tomorrow morning. I felt fine and was nice to get two whole hours to myself and read magazines.

Thank you! Sounds a little less daunting now! xxx

My experience is the exact same as GaryTankCommander's. I have always been a real breakfast person so was dreading fasting in the morning but it was actually fine.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll get the all clear - I did.
