Are there any short expectant mothers out there?

What on earth are you wearing while pregnant?! I struggle as it is to find trousers to fit and even with next petite trousers I have to wear a two inch heel. Not particularly safe when I'll be 8 months gone!

Is there such a thing as petite maternity wear?! And does anyone know where I can get anything petite friendly and reasonable. Thankfully I'm not too far along so have plenty of time to look! I don't want to go to work in leggings!

I'm 5ft and I wear the New Look over the bump jeans, you can choose the length.
Apart from that it's been maternity leggings and long tunic/jumper dresses.

RetroMum1 · 16/07/2012 14:09

I'm 4ft10 so I have brought trousers and had them shortened, I've also lived in leggings and tunic tops!

BettyandDon · 16/07/2012 14:10

Dresses and leggings here mainly.

newby2 · 16/07/2012 14:10

I her you! 5ft1 dresses and leggings mostly with hippy smock tops thrown in. Next on line is great for mat clothes. HandM are for skinny giants I find and new look ok but not my style completely.

bonzo77 · 16/07/2012 14:16

i'm 5ft 2. some useful things I have are maternity sweaters you can wear as tunics with leggings. Under the bump trousers are better than over as the over bump ones are too high and are in my arm pits. Long line maternity vest tops under normal tops which are a bit stretchy or baggy. Spend a tenner and get some nice maternity jeans taken up professionally (ask for an "original hem" to retain the original look of the hem). these are the most amazing useful comfy trousers ever. they come in short if you need them. They're not maternity but you can pull them over your bump or push them underneath. I wore them all through my last pregnancy and they were fab post csection too. They wash really well, I had 3 pairs that I wore constantly.

I think as a shortie it is always easy to get overwhelmed by baggy clothes, even when not pregnant. Comfy, clingy, stretchy stuff, layered if you like is much more flattering for me. For me it's black lycra and nice accessories all the way. Oh, and I might be short, but I'm not tiny, I'm a size 10 and have thighs and boobs.

minipie · 16/07/2012 15:39

I'm 5'3 and am mostly wearing dresses. Going to need maternity tights soon (I'm 19 weeks)

PollyIndia · 16/07/2012 15:43

5'2" and wearing dresses. I have quite a few jersey knee length dresses which work well as they cling to the bump. In anything baggy, I look enormous! I also got a pair of maternity jeans and just rolled them up a the ankle. And leggings sometimes but they feel too scruffy for meetings and work. I don't like wearing tights in the summer so been braving bare legs. Would be nice to get a bit more sun though!

ItsMyLastOne · 16/07/2012 16:04

I'm 5'3" so not really short but have a 28" inside leg. I've found buying normal maternity skinny jeans or very slim fitting trousers and just tucking them under at the bottom is easiest. Last time I got shorter trousers and jeans from new look and topshop. Otherwise leggings (although I generally have to have a lot of gathering at the ankle) or dresses and maternity tights work well.

Fatted · 16/07/2012 19:26

Dresses it is then I guess! Can anyone point me in the direction of some nice smart ones?! Are you all in maternity dresses or managing to make do with regular ones?
Bonzo thanks for the tip about over the bump! Had never even considered this!

Mamas & papas do different leg lengths

NellyBluth · 16/07/2012 19:29

OP, I had these from Seraphine and they were a godsend! Instead of sitting as cropped trousers they reached my ankles but just looked like fitted trousers. Incredibly comfortable too. I lived in them for work! (Oh, and am 5'1)

Also I had a few nice maternity dresses from Dotty P's.

mcsquared · 16/07/2012 19:30

I'm 5'3 and I find Next has been great. Decentish maternity range online and they do different leg lengths. I have two pairs of work trousers from there (one under the bump for when I was too big for normal trousers but too small for maternity, which is getting a bit tight now at 23 weeks, and one over the bump) and I felt so much more comfortable the moment I got them! Also one pair of maternity jeans from there. Other than that I wear tops and dresses that were a bit baggy before.

mylittlemonkey · 16/07/2012 19:32

Try ASOS and next for smart maternity dresses

Babygirlpw · 16/07/2012 19:45

I have found Next great and reasonably priced.

PollyIndia · 16/07/2012 20:25

Fatted I am making do with regular jersey ones from places like asos etc. inalso got a nice aztec print one from miss selfridge of all places. Figure I can still use when I have had the baby, though actually I have realised I may never want to wear a clingy dress again! A friend gave me a couple of top shop maternity dresses too and they are quite good especially for more important meetings. As long as they are knee length, I like. Any shorter and I just feel a bit tarty! I think it's the boobs. I used to like my smallish boobs!

Aworryingtrend · 17/07/2012 08:41

Next do shorter length maternity trousers- I am 5foot and not had to shorten them, I've had a pair of work trousers and 2 pairs linen trousers from there. Other than that I am finding Asos and H&M dresses good as they are not too long. Also wearing cropped maternity leggings as full-klength ones are too long for me.

Fatted · 17/07/2012 09:04

I'm 5'1" and a 28" inside leg and I need heels for Next petite trousers so I'm not holding out hope for their short ones, thanks for the suggestion anyway!

Thanks for the tips on the dresses. Has anyone used those bump things on their regular trousers? I had considered them after seeing them cheap in asda last night.

I tried a band but it felt really uncomfortable having my trousers undone. I also felt conscious about whether people could see them beng undone, and I just don't think it looked very nice either having a big band.

I haven't ever found nice fitting short maternity trousers for my 28" inside leg. At the moment I'm just wearing these and tucking the bottom up. Otherwise it's just leggings, dresses or shorts (with tights at the moment!).

I'm 5ft1 and this dress was my saviour at work -
www.seraphine.com/summer-shift-dress.html
It came below my knees but looked fine and was really comfy and smart and for me was worth the money. I wore it throughout winter (it's black and jersey) and into June - not sure why it's called a 'summer' dress.

Asos dresses are cheaper and I had a few that fitted okay without alterations too. Trousers-wise I just took them up which was a bit annoying!

SimplySoo · 17/07/2012 19:13

I'm wearing Mamas and Papas jeans, they do short, regular and long leg lengths in lots of their trousers and jeans.

mcsquared · 18/07/2012 13:23

Mama and Papas short length come up too short for me at 5'3 so they may be perfect fit for you, Fatted. Sadly their regular are too long. :(

durham69 · 18/07/2012 14:12

Dresses for me. Its a nightmare especially when you are a larger lady too. I am also still wearing Sains yoga pants in a short and my nornmal tops.

MyNameIsSuz · 19/07/2012 22:27

I'm 5'2", and second everyone who said dresses - found a good black jersey one in Topshop which is quite short and looks nice with tights. But I have mostly been wearing knee-length skirts that have a stretchy waistband and just plain maternity tops. It's more versatile as you have more options for outfits, and you can pull them up a bit higher if you feel they are too long. Half of the skirts I am wearing are not maternity (just sit under the bump, and the elasticated waist means that's not a problem) so I'll be able to wear them again afterwards. I did get this maternity one though - www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10001_10001_103020687160_-1?breadcrumb=Home%7EWomen%7EMaternity+clothing - it's the most comfy thing ever, and sits just above the knee.
