Hi, Im 39 and on my second pregnancy, my daughter is 10 years old! I had an awful pain down my right hand side of my tummy on Saturday, then followed a brown discharge (yuk!) We were told to go to hospital where we were told that it may either be ectopic, miscarriage or my appendix! Then we were left to stew on that for another 5 hours (bloody NHS) before anyone was available to scan me!! Such a horrid stressful time. Thankfully after a vaginal scan (never had that before!!) it turned out to be cysts on my ovaries. The discharge was from one that had burst. Has anyone else experienced this? I was so glad to see a heartbeat on the scan that I didnt really listen to the consultant! Are they there to stay for the pregnancy? Are they safe?

I don't really know the answer, but like you I am an older mum on my 3rd pregnancy (Age 40). I also had terrible right side pain early on in this pregnancy (6+ weeks) and was scanned in case it was ectopic. My right ovary had large cycsts which I think are a result of ovulation. I am now 22 weeks pregnant, with no more pain and the cysts, if still present, don't seem to be causing any problems.

Congrats - if you've seen a HB at 6 weeks you are not that likely to miscarry.

I had a similar experience 10 years ago when I was pregnant with my first.

Cysts on your ovaries are normal and come and go in the first trimester, they are the key to the hormones. However if they are causing you pain you need to get checked out.

I had one on each ovary, I was scanned every two weeks, the left cysts went on its own which is what they are supposed to do, the one on my right ovary grew and grew and I had it taken out via surgery when I was 14 weeks pregnant. They said it was the size of a football, so they had to take it out as it would have caused problems during birth/ and or for the baby.

DS1 is fine btw! He WAS born early but that was due to eclampsia and IGUR nothing to do with the cyst :)

I think the fact that yours has burst and you have lost the discharge is a good thing as its no long there, but they should keep an eye on you
