Hi ladies I'm new to this so sorry if I don't understand all the lingo!! Basically I need some advice/reassurance anything really!!! I'm 35 + 2 and measuring 38cms apparently baby is breech and oblique, I have a consultants app for a growth scan Friday as my last baby was 10.4lbs so they've said they will check this ones weight, midwife is useless and hosp don't seem to care that I am absolutely petrified of having another big baby!! Don't know what to do, found it hard to bond with my youngest beautiful boy due to the trauma of delivering such a large baby, my first was only 7.7lbs so do not know why second was so big as did nt have diabetes or go overdue! Any tips on how to get a bit of support from the hosp! I'm going crazy! Thanks for reading xxx

Hi Claire. I don;t really have any advice other than you need to articulate as clearly and strongly to them as you can of your fear, particularly the bonding issues with DC1 and ask them to sit with you to talk through all the options available. Good luck x

I would imagine they will do something if they find the baby to be very big. It wouldn't make much sense for them to do a scan, find out it's another big baby and then just do nothing and leave you to it. Surely there is a reason they do the scan and they will make plans dependent on the findings of the scan.

But you do need to make them aware of your concerns and not leave with any unanswered questions. Maybe make a list of questions so you don't forget anything when you're there.

Having said all this, the fundal height is so inaccurate it may not actually be a very big baby. My sister was told (from fundal height measurements but never a scan) tha her DD would be about 11-12lb so she was quite surprised when she came out weighing a whopping 6lb12oz!!! Wink Apparently she just had loads of fluid.

I think they probably want to see you as much for the position of the baby as for the size. If your baby is alternating between breech and oblique you're probably going to need a cs. If you are scheduled for a cs you'll probably have it at 39 wks so your baby is unlikely to be too big.

Big babies do no equal difficult births. Thàt is a fact

I guess maybe think what course of action you'd like the hospital to take in the event of the news being that it is another bigger baby? For example would this steer you towards a CS? If so be quite firm with them to ensure you get the approach to birth that is right for you...going with your gut being the best option. I also may have a big baba in here at 37 weeks - was estimated large at 26 weeks at a private scan - my size and weight now (and discussions on historical baby weights throughout both families) suggest he might be big. I'm booked in for a section and this was one of my drivers (there were a couple of drivers including a health one that they didn't agree with) but really had to persist in stating that this was something I really really wanted. Still nervous about it but glad they have respected my choices.

Equally I know others who have had larger babies and have recovered well and would hate to have had a CS - I suppose it is very personal. Good luck with this one :)

If you are feeling this anxious you need to think about whether you would prefer a c section rather than a natural birth. If you do then you need to be very lee with your consultant about this at your next appt. I found it useful to read up on the pros and cons of having an elective c section before the appt and explain to the consultant you have done this and are fully aware of the procedure but taking into consideration your previous experience with your DS and the bonding issues after you want a c section. Ask them also to put your concerns on your maternity notes so anyone else you are seen by knows of your concerns. If the dr thinks you have carefully considered your options and are very anxious about a natural birth they will take your seriously. As previous poster said, if baby is breech then likely to be c action anyway.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone :) I think I'm partly just scaring myself as the attitude I have received from medical professionals is very much "you've done it once you can do it again" they don't seem to concerned about the mental and emotional effects having a large baby have on the mother which are my main concerns I know that physically I can do it but I just don't want to! My midwife has written nothing in my maternity notes about my upset although I have been fixated on the 'big baby' business since day dot, the scan is apparently a routine scan tht they have to do after you have a macrosomic baby the consultant isn't even aware of the breech oblique business yet, he/she hasn't even met me!
