Hello

I was hoping someone could confirm whether it's all nuts or only peanuts you have to avoid in pregnancy. I can only find references to avoiding peanuts in "official" sources, but I hear/read numerous anecdotal references to the need to give up all nuts.

Can anyone confirm (with a source please) one way or the other?

Thanks for your help.

I hope it's just peanuts because I've been happily eating chocolate bars with hazelnuts in them

The one I'm confused about is prawns... every site I look at seems to have conflicting advice.

Shame because a prawn mayonnaise sandwich or a prawn cocktail is really appealing at the moment... as is those little prawn wontons and sesame prawn toasts you get in the mini chinese packs... other seafood it doesn't bother me if I don't eat it

udar · 12/12/2003 10:48

I've avoided peanuts and peanut butter etc, but have had the occasional brazil nut, almond, and pistachios as they contain quite a few essential minerals. I don't eat them often, maybe a couple a day.

udar · 12/12/2003 10:51

agree GeorginaA - I decided that if the prawns were hot and cooked then it was OK - ie. sweet and sour prawns etc, but not sushi as it is cold. I can't believe I have another 3.5months until I can have some sushi.

GeorginaA · 12/12/2003 11:13

It's Marks & Spencer that's the killer - I can live without loads of stuff until I walk into their food hall... then I don't just want, I NEED a prawn mayonnaise sandwich.... I NEED chicken liver pate... I NEED brie ... I sound like my two year old sometimes

I think M&S should just be banned when pregnant ...

dot1 · 12/12/2003 11:14

I have to admit to eating an M&S prawn mayonaise sandwich when I was at the height of my morning sickness and it was honestly the only thing that I could bear to eat without throwing up!! I ADORE prawns but that's the only time I've eaten them (so far...).

GeorginaA · 12/12/2003 11:18

It's funny, I never used to like ANY seafood, especially not prawns. It was an M&S prawn mayonnaise sandwich that converted me (had a few bites of someone else's to try it then had to go and buy my own!) I think they must bewitch them to make them so tempting...

madgirl · 12/12/2003 11:22

i was v bad yesterday and had sushi yesterday.
in japan they eat sushi whilst they're pregnant.
in france they eat brie and camembert when they're pregnant.
in some US states drinking whilst in pregnant is illegal!

GeorginaA · 12/12/2003 11:28

"in japan they eat sushi whilst they're pregnant.
in france they eat brie and camembert when they're pregnant. "

The only thing about these is that the produce tends to be much fresher in their stores and has a quicker turnover, so food poisoning is less likely. Distribution is so thoroughly efficient in Japan that sushi is usually only a few hours old before being eaten, even on supermarket shelves. Unfortunately in the UK it's going to be a few days old at least

I should imagine it's much safer if eaten in a restaurant though...

dot1 · 12/12/2003 11:46

I told myself that the prawns in an M&S sandwich must be OK - well, it's M&S isn't it..?!!

GeorginaA · 12/12/2003 11:54

I like your logic

(plans a trip to M&S this afternoon...)

madgirl · 12/12/2003 11:59

actually didn't mean sushi in pack- as i do think that this is dodgy at the best of times. take your point about freshness.
was only half joking..........

Back on to nuts... My GP told me that if you have nut allergies in the family you should avoid all nuts and peanuts but if you don't then you can eat all nuts (including peanuts) as long you don't eat to much. He told me to avoid McDonalds Mayonnaise though?!?!

Deep fried camembert .... mmmmm.... actually can have that as the soft cheese is cooked thus killing any bugs

zebra · 12/12/2003 13:06

Me=peanut butter lover in previous pregnancies. I've given up worrying about it.

This confuses me. The reason we are not supposed to eat brie, mayonnaise, runny egg, etc etc is the risk of developing food poisoning?? Right?? Well surely that risk is just as high whether you are pregnant or not???

So we choose to eat those things knowing that the odds are we will NOT be poisoned. If we thought we were going to be ill surely we would just never eat them!

So why is this all different when you are pregnant?

AnnaK · 12/12/2003 13:38

Because you are more susceptible to food poisoning when you are pregant. In order to become and remain pregant, your immune system changes and food poisoning becomes more of a risk when it isn't fully functioning.
As to the nuts, I am mildly allergic to walnuts, brazil nuts and hazel nuts and was told to avoid all nuts during pregancy. However, before I was told this I was living off peanut butter sandwiches adn snickers bars! I try to be good, it it isn't always possible...

udar · 12/12/2003 13:39

A lot of these things (not peanuts) carry a bug called Listeria which can kill or harm an unborn baby. In a normal adult you may just have some signs of food poisoning, or nothing at all.
There was a case in NZ of a lady who ate a roast vegetable salad at 8 months and the baby died.
When I was researching what I understood as the basic rule of thumb apart from raw shellfish etc was that if something had been cooked then cooled it couldn't be eaten. So this includes things like vegetable salads, both the rice in sushi and the seafood (think smoked salmon), chicken etc. I have eaten reheats but I make sure it is baking hot before I would eat it.
Is this right?

M2T · 12/12/2003 13:42

Sometimes I do think this all goes a bit OTT!

I'm not talking about the nuts BTW .... I know how serious that can be... but mayonnaise??

Really, it gets to the point that you are scared to eat or drink anything..... including tap water!

Crunchie · 12/12/2003 13:56

Not that I am pg, but I ate prawns all the way through my pg, M&S sandwiches or whatever. Mayonaise is only dodgy if it is freshly made, the bottled stuff is fine, I also ate runny fried egg sandwiches though!!

I just find it is all madness, Udar not having anything that has been cooked and cooled would surely rule out so much food wouldn't it?

M2T · 12/12/2003 13:59

Crunchie - I was quite strict with myself first time around..... obsessive even!! Not this time though.
It's all a bit hysterical IMO.
