Experience of measuring too big?!?!

Hi,

Wondered if any of you ladies had any experience of measuring too big?!

Went to my 28 week appointment at the hospital on monday and after lots of faffing the doc told me that I was measuring 34 weeks!!! She couldn't tell me if this is because of a big baby or because of too much fluid and when I asked what that all meant, I got a 'we'll tackle it when we come to it, come back in a week for your scan!!!!!' So I am now worrying and wondering how big I am going to get!! I knew I was big but I'm all bump so thought I was just carrying it all out front.

Anyway, if anyone has any experiences to share I'd be grateful!

Thanks Smile

I was measuring 40+2 at 34 weeks. I was measured before that, but that is the one I remember. I was offered a sizing scan but turned it down.
I had a very big baby, and was the size of an aeroplane hangar.

How much do you want in the way of detail?

Oohh okay. I just want to know what it means if he is a big baby if anything, and what it means if it is a build up of fluid.

Measured full term by 35wks.
10lb 15oz baby.
Now a healthy 2.5yr old.

Wow Ninjacat!! Did you have them naturally?

I measured big all the way through my second pregnancy, and had to have lots of extra scans.

Ds2 was born at 40+4 measuring just 7lb. It was all fluid.

Manda472 · 11/07/2012 18:39

At 32wks I was measuring 38 wks and was scanned at 36 wks. Baby was measured at 7lb 14 and also the "too much water" condition was discussed. I was also given an internal scan because apparently the cervix might be under pressure.
Waters went with a loud pop at exactly 37 wks (there was loads!) and she was born by c section.
Our main problem was because of having too much water it meant she couldn't go head down and stayed transverse with no chance of moving.
She wasnt as big as they thought and was born at 7lb 3 which I think is good for being early.
One thing they will prob check is for type 2 diabetes which can cause extra fluid and big babies

FannyFifer · 11/07/2012 18:42

From 30 weeks onward I was measuring above 40 weeks.
I'm a larger lady though so think that affects measurements.
They were telling me that baby was huge, would be at least 9lb but prob a lot bigger.

My DD was 8lb6oz

Emandlu · 11/07/2012 18:45

DS being a big baby didn't seem to affect anything. He was 10lb 5oz, and he was easier to deliver than my 9lb'er previously. I think where I live they are more inclined towards C-sections for big babies which was why I turned down the sizing scan. I had him naturally with no problems.

I have no idea about the excess fluid though. sorry.

I measured too big by a few weeks but I always just had massive bumps - babies were 7lb 2 and 7lb 13.

Flisspaps · 11/07/2012 20:59

I measured big from about 28 w.

Growth scan showed big baby, predicted 9 1/2- 10 1/2 lb.

DS was born (planned homebirth with transfer to hospital for prolonged 2nd stage, forceps) 11lb 7ozs.

Pootle78 · 11/07/2012 21:23

I'm measuring 40 at 37+2 so not huge, but was given a growth scan at 34 weeks due to borderline bmi, stomach off the scale and predicted 6lb 11oz at time. Second scan today stomach and now head off the scale (well over 95th percentile - couldn't even get a proper stomach measurement) and was told baby was 9lb 4oz with just under 3 weeks to go. Have another consultant appointment next Wednesday where I'll be having a s and s at 38+2. So I'm on the wait and see fence!!!

I measured ridiculously big with DD my growth measuremnt every time @ MW was shooting up and up, weeks ahead of what it should be. Went for growth scans. Checked for fluid. Had diabetes test. Finally the consultants said it was 'unexplained' and made no plans to intervene. Dd was born 7lb15 at 38+5 I think, barely noticed waters go, she was a skinny little thing to look at you would have said she weighed a lot less.
Moral of the story is sometimes you just measure big apparently. Are you short? As I am 5ft2 and consultant did once mention it might be where bubba didnt have as much room inside so just went 'outwards'. HTH and good luck Smile

Flisspaps · 11/07/2012 22:36

Oh, and I didn't have GD and went into labour spontaneously at 40+11 (40+1 by my dates)

MrsHoolie · 11/07/2012 23:30

I had 8 growth scans as my bump was measuring way over each appointment.
He was 10lb 6oz and extremely long with long arms and legs so he actually looked very skinny!
I had a c section as labour didn't progress although that had happened in my first labour too and nothing to do with the size of either baby.
DP was a 10lb baby so that probably has something to do with it.

osterleymama · 11/07/2012 23:39

I had borderline GD which meant I tested just below the threshold and so wasn't diagnosed. I had excess fluid and DS was 10lb. He also had low blood sugar at birth which meant the hospital insisted on giving him formula prior to my milk coming in.

Make sure you've had your GD test and ask what the measurement is and if it is close to the level at which they diagnose you!

ButtonBoo · 12/07/2012 06:19

Exactly the same as Cookie

I was measuring big from 28 weeks. They could not find out why. One GP measured me 10 weeks ahead!!! But he did say he didn't think he'd done it right. When my usual GP checked she revised it to 6 weeks ahead.

All my family and friends were predicting DD would be 9-10lb.

My baby was born at 38+6 weighing 6lb 5oz.
