Sorry if I am posting in the wrong place but couldn't find a more appropriate topic. Still have moses basket and mattress from ds who has just turned 2 and was just wondering if anyone knew what the science behind buying a mattress for each new baby was? Or is it just one of those things they say? Have heard some say if the old one was from your own baby it doesn't matter. Now am 34 weeks and wondering if I should get a new one?? The one I have has a pvc coating anyway so I don't see the harm?? Thanks?

I would use the same one. You know the history, it is covered in pvc, and they are in it such a short time. I bought a second hand moses basket for DD1 and bought a new mattress. No idea why really as that was pvc covered. I think it is different with cot mattresses. They can often absorb things, and support or structure can be affected over time. Did not buy new again for DD2 and now expecting DC3 and will reuse.

Cheekychops84 · 11/07/2012 10:46

I'm re-using a PVC one for dd3 too! But when I said to friends the other day I was using the same cot mattress well I was slammed to the ground ! It's was like Omg no u can't deff not ! So should u buy a new cot mattress ?

I tend to get paranoid about things like this so I'd buy a new one to be on the safe side. Realistically as long as the mattress is relatively new and has always been covered in a waterproof protector, I don't really see a major issue. I'd check on the SIDS website tbh.

ValiumQueen · 11/07/2012 10:54

I won't be buying a new (proper) cot mattress as completely enclosed by pvc. I would not use one that was ventilated. Wise advice to research on sands website.

ValiumQueen · 11/07/2012 10:55

Sids even.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 11/07/2012 11:25

For the sake of £30, I'd buy a new one - if, god forbid, my baby died from SIDS I'd never forgive myself, even if the link between reusing mattresses & SIDS isn't fully understood yet.

susiegrapevine · 11/07/2012 12:01

Thanks for the advice. Checked the site and they advise as long as it has a completely water proof cover with no cracks holes or tears it is ok to use again. Will check mine is ok and use again if it is.

If it is from your previous child you know how it has been stored and you know if the mattress could have been weeed in or whatever. Since you know it has a waterproof cover then the insides are unlikely to be damp, which is where the risk lies I believe.
The advice to get a new mattress is mostly for people who get a second hand bed/cot/moses for their baby which has come from a different home.

That said, they only cost a tenner so if it is something that you are going to have even the slightest bit of worry about, get a new one - look on ebay as I got a crib mattress for £10 there as I borrowed the crib from friends.

susiegrapevine · 11/07/2012 13:26

Well yes and its been stored in one of those vacuum bags so no dust etc.

I wasn't going to bother replacing the matress for the moses basket as DS1 barely used it, but then after a bit of digging on the SIDS website, decided to play it safe for the sake of £12 - even the most expensive moses basket matresses I looked at were only £20 (luckily the more budget one was the right size for my basket, as I know it's unlikely this one will use it for long either). Cot was a no-brainer though, albeit a nightmare to find a replacement matress as was an Ikea purchase, with all their weird sizing (which has changed again in the 5 years since we bought it!). Got their in the end though.

However, ours was just stuffed up into the attic in a bin bag, rather than being properly packaged away, so much more risk of dust, damp etc. It's your call at the end of the day - for me, £55 (for both) was a small price to pay for peace of mind

QuietNinjaObsessing · 11/07/2012 19:31

Why does it matter if the cot mattress isn't covered in a waterproof cover? I was gonna reuse ds cot mattress (ttc at the mo) but should we really get a new one ? He had a waterproof sheet on all the time as he was a very wet/leaky baby.

ValiumQueen · 11/07/2012 19:48

I think fumes can be a concern if not sealed, but am not an expert.

amillionyears · 11/07/2012 19:54

I think this is one of those things that if you can afford it,buy a new one.
I did,and ended up being glad nearly every day about it.

amillionyears · 11/07/2012 19:55

You could ask for it as a present, and have another memory or am I being over sentimental

wickedfairy · 11/07/2012 19:55

I am pg with DC3 - I have (and will again) purchase a new mattress for the moses basket. I have a really old, large moses basket so need the mattress custom made, but still it is only about £35.

I have not (and will not) buy a new mattress for the cotbed - the baby normally moves into that about 6-7 months. It has a removeable/washable top layer and DD is currently using that now.

She will still be in the cotbed when this new baby is born but my mum has a cot she is giving me with an (almost) new mattress, which I will keep. She bought the new mattress and it has only been slept on a couple of times by my DD and my niece, when they have stayed at her house.

I think that SIDS mainly affects very young babies (?), so I do think it's important to use a new mattress when they are that age. Don't think the cot one makes that much difference, unless they go ito a cot at a young age. I guess because my moses basket is big, I have them in there longer than you would with the modern day, smaller ones.

QuietNinjaObsessing · 11/07/2012 20:35

Yes wicked that's what I thought. New crib mattress as baby when he or she comes along will be under 6 months so at most risk of sids and then when they are older and risk falls its not quite so important so would be ok with ds cot mattress. I, sure I read somewhere that the risk when siblings use the same mattress is also lower? Am willing to be corrected though.

ValiumQueen · 12/07/2012 07:33

My kids outgrew moses basket by three to four weeks.

If co- sleeping, would you buy a new mattress for your bed? Also for pram? Just a thought.

Midgetm · 12/07/2012 08:27

I read that if used by family and you have cleaned it then there is no need. Its the bacteria it can harbour that is the issue so if it is clean and covers cleaned I thought the advice was ok to use. Just got that from a bit if low level googling. I will replace Moses mattress as so cheap and I lent it to someone else. Cot mattress probably not. It's had covers on it I will wash, and air and reuse as only DD slept in it.

susiegrapevine · 12/07/2012 10:54

Thanks for all your thoughts ladies. Good to see different opinions. Tho still no one has shown any science or studies behind why so it seems its all just guess work really as no one really knows the cause of sids especially as it happens to babies whose parents have done everything right.

Silly question here - I was debating whether to buy new Moses basket and cot mattresses. Moses basket one was stored in loft in bin bag - but not sealed so think best to get a new one but can I not just wash it?!

Re cot - our daughter used the cot until about 6 months ago and the mattress has been kept in the loft/unde our bed etc. We have had builders in though so a lot of dust. Not sure what to do re this one!

Any ideas?
